Passport... Renew or no?

So I have 4 years left on my passport... I've been married for 3 years and have never updated my passport to reflect married name. Do I spend $110 to get correct name on passport or do I continue riding it out and just keep booking flights in my maiden name?

What does your SSA card, driver's license and marriage license say? If both of those are the same, then yes I would update it.

Passport... Renew or no?

I updated everything but my passport to my married name. I know tsa only checks your passport against your boarding pass to make sure name match up... I wasn't sure if I would have a problem at any other points Chat Icon

Eta: it just seems like a rip off... It should be way less to just update your name...Chat Icon I also have to get my dd a passport so this is looking like a small fortune Chat Icon

You don't need to update your passport. Just keep booking flights/trips in your maiden name until it expires. It doesn't matter what any of your other ID has.

That's the advice of my dad who has been a customs agent (now ICE) for almost 30 years.

I'm keeping mine until it expires and book in my maiden. imo changing it is like money in the trash. I bring along a copy of my marriage license.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Wait till it expires then change it. Your maiden name is still a legal name for you.

Re: Passport... Renew or no?

Just keep booking under maiden name. It's no big deal. I don't think it's worth the $110 unless you do. I renewed my passport right before my wedding so it'll be almost 10 years before I can change it but I don't care. Then again I have not changed my legal name yet and I may never.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in! I'd def rather out the money towards my dd's passport instead so glad to hear I won't have complications.

Just as an FYI - if you are making the change within one year, the State Department waives the fee.

Thanks! That ship has sailed for me. I didn't realize that actually until a long time had passed.

Passport... Renew or no?

Definitely just keep it and book flights in your maiden name. No sense in paying to change it and then paying to renew again.

Remember -- the airlines and state department have no idea if you're married or not. They only care about the name on the passport and that's it. I was married in 2007 and finally have to renew my passport. Have left the country 3-4 times since then and never changed my name...just booked in my maiden name.

We're going away in June and I finally will be renewing my expired passport and changing my name.
