Britax Advocate 70 G3 Rear Facing?!?!

I am so bummed.

My girls are almost 20 months. I have had them in a chicco keyfit 30 infant seat. I have a chevy avalanche which is as wide and big as a suburban. (It is built on the same chassis).

For christmas Grandma bought the girls two Britax advocate 70 G3. DH just tried to install one of them in my truck rear facing. I put my baby in (she is 50th percentile for height and weight) and she is completely cramped. Her knees are up into her chest. WTH?! The seat was installed at the 30* angle so in THEORY it should be right. The seat is huge. If I recline it anymore then the front seat has to be ALLL the way up and no one would be able to use it. Nor is it safe to use because of the airbag.

In her infant seat they have plenty of room. I wanted to upgrade to the advocates because they are supposed to be much better seats. They are rated rear facing from infant to 40 lbs. My girls are 22 and 28 pounds.

If you have this seat, how long could you rear face it?

Now I am faced with the dilemma of either front facing it or keeping them in the not as good infant seat until they hit the limits. But I don't know which is better for them? Less good rear facing or really good front facing?

What would you do?

Britax Advocate 70 G3 Rear Facing?!?!

I wanted the Brintax seats but they are HUGE. I decided against them because I did not want to limit how I use my car. I have a Chrylser 200 and knew any of the Britax woudl require the front seat to be moved forward.

I tried a graco and Evenflo and ended up with the evenflo. I love it and DS is comfy in it.

Just make sure the seat is in position 3 recline (and angled between 30 and 454 degrees)- that's what the instructions say.

That is what it is at, 30* recline. The line guide they tell you to use is perfectly horizontal level.... but still her legs are cramped up...

We had no problem with it reclined and DD has very long legs. She was almost 34 inches when turned her front facing at 18 months.

ETA - just saw your girls are 20 months. You are not ready to turn them around?

We have a Britax Advocate 70CS - don't know how different it is from the G3 but we had no issues with it being rear-facing. Kept DS rear-facing until he was a little over 2 and he was 90+ percentile in height and weight. He was comfortable. You do need to recline it somewhat.

Their legs being crossed, bent or touching the seat doesn't matter. Before I turned DS at 25 months his legs were touching the back of the seat and then some. He never had a problem with it. Now even FF he crosses his legs. The recommendation is 2 years old to turn FF because of the development of neck muscles. A child's head and neck can not stand the impact in a crash and any whiplash they incur can cause injury, paralysis and worse. In a RF accident their legs will travel forward with them therefore reducing if not eliminating the risk of injuries to their legs. Personally though, I'd rather deal with injured legs then neck.

We have the Britax Boulevard CS-70. I returned the advocate because I felt like it was so big. That said, DD is tall and 22 months and fits fine in the Boulevard and we actually have an MDX which smaller than your car. Can you exchange them for the Boulevard? I wouldn't want to forward face her before 2 so I'd probably find a different seat that I can RF because I can't imagine they are comfy in their infant seats.

ETA: Her legs touch the back of the seat and her knees are a bit bent, but she doesn't seem to care and seems to be very comfortable when we are in the car, never makes a peep!

It is fine for their feet to touch, legs to bend etc. They appear cramped to us because we'd probably need chiropractors after 5 minutes of sitting like they do.

But kids are different. They are more flexible than we are and tend to curl up anyways. Watch them when they sleep or when they sit on the floor, they crunch themselves up, sleep like frogs, go back to fetal position...........

And

There are no documented cases of a child breaking a leg from being rear facing. It is, however, a very common injury in FORWARD facing children.

If you don't like the seats, there are other options out there that DO allow for more leg room, like the Graco MySize/Size4 Me and MyRide, Evenflo Symphony,

The current recommendation from NHTSA and the AAP state that age 2 is the MINIMUM age to turn forward facing. It is preferred to keep them rear facing until they reach the limits of their convertible seats.

Here is a Norwegian public service video which shows a simulated crash at 50km/h (31mph) RF and FF

I have the Advocate 70 CS (2011 model) and I still have DD rear facing.

She's 33 1/2 inches and 29 pounds. She crosses her legs or puts them over the sides.

NO plans to turn her around anytime soon
