NYC DOE Teachers...I need advice

As an 8 year tenured teacher in a new school due to an open market transfer, when would you tell your new principal that you were expecting a baby in July and plan on taking only 5 weeks of FMLA in the fall. I'm nervous being new to the building even though I know I have job security in the city. I don't really know anyone in my new building to ask and can't really feel out my principal. She's a single woman who is "childless by choice" in her words. So I don't know how she'll treat me or handle it. I was thinking of waiting 20 weeks, but I'm starting to pop a little. TIA PS I have my pre observation meeting next week. Should I tell her then?

How far along are you now? I would wait until at least 12 weeks if not more to tell them. I doubt she will give you a hard time. When they hire younger women they expect this to happen eventually. I would tell her when you feel ready. As for taking the FMLA those are days they have to give you. You cant be fired or excessed because of that. I have a co-worker who took the full child care leave and she came back and got her old job back. They are required to hold your job for you. You are not guaranteed the same classroom or position but a job in your licence.

If you don't mind me asking where do you teach? Are they looking for any special education/SS teachers? :)

Thank you, I teach in Staten Island. We moved from Queens to NJ and I was able to transfer to a school right at the tip of south SI. I'm sure you're looking for somewhere near long island. thanks again!

Wait until 12 weeks or until you're clearly showing. There's not alot she can do to you, and probably won't say anything at all. She might surprise you and be supportive.
