Please recommend your thermometer for an infant.
The Vicks digital thermometer that I'm currently using drives me nuts. This morning, I used it under DD's arm (she has a cold), and it said 97.8. Rectally, it said 100.7! Quite a difference! I know rectal is more accurate, but should there really be that much of a gap?
I hate taking her temperature rectally (way TMI, but it often makes her poop right on the thermometer!), and was thinking of getting an ear thermometer. Any recommendations? TIA!

We have an ear one - It is Braun. But really - if you want an accurate temp - rectal is the way to go.

We use the vicks rectal... with my DD she grew out of the pooping on the thermometer thing (same way she grew out of peeing every time I removed her diaper, lol).

Re: Please recommend your thermometer for an infant.
there is def. a differnce between what you would get rectal and under the arm.
its not conisdered a fever if tempature taken rectal is under 100.4.
I have one from target that does all 3 the under the arm one gives you somethign completely different than what you would get rectal.

I have a Braun for the ear and a rectal. Both will give different temperatures. Unfortunately, rectal is most accurate.

Which one do you have? I bought the Exergen recently and it was such a piece of junk. Completely inaccurate on every read. I ended up taking it back.

Re: Please recommend your thermometer for an infant.
You usually need to add to the under arm temp. But I used that the whole time, never had issues.
Ive never stuck anything up her butt. Under arm worked fine.

I'm pretty sure during one of my first few NB visits with my ped., he explained to me that there is a 3 degree diff..for ex. under arm is 97, mouth is 98 and rectal is 99..does that make sense? So that may not be so far off...after using a few thermometers i use this one which, I like...it's rectal. Image Attachment(s):

I have the Exergen forehead scanner. Love that thing. So quick and easy. And then I have a safety 1st one that I use for rectal temps if I need it.

This is the one we have. I always did rectal with DS up until he was almost 3. Most accurate reading and I never wanted to take any chances. Now at 3 I do the ear but if it shows a higher temp, I then do rectal. Doesn't bother him.

We have both a Safety 1st and a Vicks rectal and both work great. Rectal is the only accurate way to get a reading. Otherwise, it's a guessing game. We still do only rectal on our almost 3yo and on our 13 month old.
