At what age did your ped tell you to start introducing "real" foods?

For example, yogurt, eggs, bread, pasta, cheese, little shreds of chicken, etc? My DD is 9 months and my ped said def no to all these things but my friends' babies are allowed to try them. I am allowed to mash up things she's already had as baby food (carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans, bananas, etc.) Just wondering what the consensus is. TIA!

I started on Thanksgiving when she was 6.5 months old. She had her first bits of turkey (as per my ped). Now at 7.5 months, all I really give her is table food. She tries everything we are eating. Yesterday she had chicken, corn and whole wheat couscous! She feeds herself everything except for things like yogurt etc. When giving eggs, at this point I am only giving yolks.

If you are comfortable with it, just give her a little bit at a time and see how she does with it.

I was told to add yogurt, meat, and finger foods at 8 months. I don't think that includes bread or other table foods, but more like chinks of carrots, banana, etc and he said puffs as well.

He said the finger foods are good for her motor skills as well as learning to eat the different textures. His advice was to go with what DD will tolerate since some babies are ready for a piece of steak at that age and others are still gagging on baby food.

we were never told to do it or not to. we just did. I had read so much about lots of babies eating real food. If they could handle the texture of the real food, I didn't see a problem with giving it to them. We were told to stay away from egg whites until they were 12 months, honey until 18 months, and shell fish/nuts until 24 months.

At her 6 month appointment, we got the go ahead for little piece of bread, puffs, pastina, meat, etc. We've been doing these things as the opportunity arises. No meat yet though. She can't have dairy yet because of an allergy, and her ped said that we will try introducing things like yogurt at 9 months.

We got the go ahead for table foods at 9 months, excluding honey, fish and nuts. If you think she's ready, give it a try.

Reading your responses, I'm even more perplexed. I know the ped mentioned not giving pasta bc of the egg in it, but he really didn't give a reason for everything else. He is old school, but usually so laid back that I was kind of shocked he said no to these things when all of my friends' babies are already eating them.

It is definitly perplexing CallaLily- i felt the same way- bc everyone you speak to has different thoughts and does things differently! I think alot of things when it comes to babys have to be figured out as you go along. If I had a second DD I feel like I would have to figure things out all over again bc I didnt really follow a set formula of rules but rather trial and error. That being said, other than shellfish, honey and nuts which are the three true 'no nos, I think your DD is old enough to try all of the foods you mentioned , and any table food, at this point. If she doesnt take to some or all of them, just try again in a few days, or weeks, Good luck!

The AAP recently revised their recommendations and now they say anything after 6 mos except no choking hazzards or honey (botulism).

We started DS with things like yogurt, wagon wheels and arrowroots, and also gave him chunkier pieces of banana and avocado.

Then we moved to things like puffs and cheerios.

At 8 mos he started to crawl/stand up and started to eat things that DS 1 left within his reach (mainly Froot Loops, Pirates Booty, Wheat Thins, Mini Muffins). We introduced Mac and Cheese, Pastina, eggs, breads, chicken nuggets, etc around this time as well.

Re: At what age did your ped tell you to start introducing "real" foods?

At DS' 9 month appointment they gave us a feeding schedule to start incorporating cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs and eventually to start weaning him off formula and go to milk. This feeding schedule is supposed to be done over the 3 months until his 1st birthday. DS has had cheese, yogurt and egg whites so far. We try him with a different cheese every week. I have been also cutting up chicken real small and feeding him that as well as pasta. Also bananas and strawberries cut up tiny. DS has no allergies as of now.

DH and I have NO family history of food allergies so I felt comfortable trying foods earlier. We even had DD try peanut butter before a year and she was fine. But we did stay away from anything that was a choking hazard and things like honey which they don't recommend until after age 1.

Every ped is so different, honestly, you have to do what you feel comfortable with. We felt our DD was ready for table foods (even with NO teeth Chat Icon ) and my ped was okay with it. Some people are nervous about choking and hold off on table foods for a while, some people have a history of allergies and hold off for that reason. Your best bet is to make an informed decision based on the needs of your child. You don't always HAVE to do everything your ped says because peds views differ and you know your child best.

If you feel comfortable, try some soft table food and see how she does. To get them use to chewing and swallowing my ped actually recommended taking a bagel, slicing it in half, then slicing it open and letting it "dry out" for a day so it's a little stale and then let DD have a piece of it to practice biting off pieces of food and chewing. It worked great. Because they suck their food a lot the bagel would get wet and mushy and it was just little mushy bits that would fall off and she would chew. She loved it! Maybe try something like that. And whatever you give just do one food at a time, wait a few days to see if there is a reaction, and if it's all good try something new.

Good luck! Chat Icon

My Dr said 4 months for some fruits (purees), but I EBF until 6 months and then gave solids. I've read it's better for their gut to wait then.
