Landscaping

I'd like to do some landscaping to the front of my house this spring. (yes i'm already thinking about spring :) ) I tried to do it myself last year and nothing grew so this year i'm hiring a professional! If you have hired a landscaper what was the cost? i have two areas that need to be done, both pretty small. Also, did they design and do everything for you?

Lastly, any reccommendations for a landscaper?

I planted so many things last year and nothing grew! I don't have any recommendations but I would like to hear what others have to say.
