Eczema in 3 yr old
My DS has always had bad eczema. It's worse this time of season and then can be 100 percent fine other times. He seems to be getting patchy now. I ran out of the cream the Ped gave me and he wants me to come in if it gets bad, but to try cortizone first. I've been using cortizone and find sometimes he's fine and other days he's worse. Doesn't seem to bother him too much. I notice it most when he's in the bath so I cream him up with Aveeno eczema cream then the cortizone on the bad spots. Anything else I can do?

The bath always makes my DD's worse. Neosporin makes a new eczema cream, havent tried it yet though.
What always worked for us was plain old vaseline( petroleum jelly) we would slather her up with it before bed every night in the winter. It helped to keep the skin hydrated and not as many eczma spots. The dry air in the winter is bad for the skin.

Eczema in 3 yr old
I still use aquafur. I lotion that poor girl from head to toe. It still gets patchy.
Her problem spots are her inner elbows, calves, and lower back and sometimes her upper back (back of neck). Pretty much anywhere it can get moist and rub. So her hair on her neck, her elbows from movement, her back the same and her calves from her pants.
We use calendula (sp) cream on those spots when she's home or have the school lotion her elbows at least twice a day.
Winter is just brutal!
ETA: after we slather on her aquafur at night we cover up so she doesnt stick to stuff which will then irrate her. I think it got worse for her when she was 3 or so because she began to itch until they bled. So I keep her nails low and filed and try to stay on top of them. If they do bleed, we put neorsporin on them. *Sigh*

I use bar soap on Luce, never liquid or suspended soaps per my ped. Canus goats milk soap and also the cream lotion. it keeps it in check. also keep a humidifier going. this weather is so bad for it.

Re: Eczema in 3 yr old
My DS's eczema gets better when I bathe him- much worse if he goes a few days without. He is 1. I bathe him, using soap on the "yucky" parts, then slather him with olive oil, then meds if the skin is really bad, then aveeno cream after that. I use a calendula/coconut based oil on his face and patchy spots.

Oh, also-- the soap you use is important- my ped recommends dove bar, but I use an all natural olive oil based bar soap. Make sure it is not a detergent/liquid soap, and no fragrance or color.

Re: Eczema in 3 yr old
My son is constantly battling with it but we have a pretty good system down now.
-I put a bit of olive oil in his bath, every time. -I use Dove bar soap -I only soap him up at the very end of his bath (like as the water is draining) and then I rinse him off with clean water. I don't use any sort of bubble bath. -I only give him a bath every other day. -We use a ton of Eucerin all the time (every diaper change). The heavy cream in the tub. -We have forced air heat so we keep his humidifier on every night.
Hope this helps!

Re: Eczema in 3 yr old
You have to keep trying things until you find what works for your DC. I went through 10-15 containers of lotions or cremes until I found what worked best for us. My ped told me bathe every other day, the dermatologist said every day. For my DS, bathing daily works better. I use either Cetaphil liquid cleanser or Dove bar soap, per the dermatologist. Immediately after the bath, lotion him up in either Cetaphil creme or CeraVae creme.
We used Aquaphor in the beginning, but it was too heavy for him unless his skin was cracked or bleeding. And it stains EVERYTHING, so I stopped using it. I tried Vaseline, but it was messy and for DS, didn't seem to work better than the cremes.
No wool clothes. I even limit fleece and keep him mostly in cotton. Run your laundry on a second rinse cycle to make sure all the soap is out, and use dye and scent free detergent. Running the humidifier helps. It has gotten a little better as he got older, but it hasn't gone away. For us, the worst flare ups are in the change of seasons - fall to winter and winter to spring.

Re: Eczema in 3 yr old
Our derm recommended Cerave. We use that to bathe and slather on the aquaphor multiple times a day. DS's eczema is much better now than when he was a baby/toddler. He still often has cracked bleeding skin.

Re: Eczema in 3 yr old
I would do baths as quickly as possible. And we sprinkle a little baking soda in the bath water. I dress ds and dd in only 100% cotton clothing! No dryer sheets in dryer with their clothes. We use all free and clear detergent. We find that dove sensitive skin body wash works well for them, followed by cetaphil cream (the thick stuff that comes in the big tub) works best (aveeno and Vaseline definitely didn't help, in fact Vaseline made ds worse). I hope some of these tips are helpful. Tey are all from our pediatric dermatologist who is a miracle worker!!, When we do these things, our dc hardly have any flare ups.

Cerave here too, bath every other night, not hot. Lotion and covered hands in the cold. Steroid creams if it gets really bad.

This what my first thought too. Eczema is a form of allergy to dairy.
DD#1 had terrible terrible eczema and once dairy was cut out she doesn't have a drop of dry skin on her and I don't even need to put moisturizer.
The other still have it and they still each regular yogurt and cheese. I do have them on almond milk.
