Toddler upstairs by them selves ... what gates if any?
DD just turned 2 and will be upstairs by herself and in a toddler bed (she is climbing out of her crib so i have no choice). What gates do i need. I have one at the bottom of the stairs so her and the dogs dont go up it we plan on keeping her door closed and she currently cant open it but i still feel we should have a gate somewhere.
I am thinking a gate for her room along with the door closed and/or one at the top of the gate.
DH does not like the idea of the gate at the top of the stairs cause he is afraid if for some reason she gets out of her room she will try to climb over the gate and fall down the stairs. his solution is to put a lock ont he outside of her door
What do you do you if you have a toddler upstairs?
ETA: i posted this below but wanted to put it in the original post:
I would never put a lock outside her door!! Just becuase my DH thinks its a good idea i dont!!!

Get an extra tall gate for the top of the stairs. Not a pressure mount one either! We have one at the top of our stairs and my son has NEVER tried to climb on it... I wouldn't lock the outside of her door. God forbid she has to get out fast.. You can try a gate on her door..

What do you need a gate for if you are closing her door? Can't she open the gate by now? And can't she just walk down the steps? Do NOT out a lock on her door - that is so dangerous in case there is an emergency and she needs to get out.
I think if you are worried about her getting up in the middle of the night when it is dark and her accidentally falling down the steps I would only have one at the top.

she def doesnt know how to open a gate cause we never had them up and she doesnt really know how to go downstairs at least i am not sure if she really does she can handle 3 stairs but idont know about more than that cause our old house we rented was one level so she never had to deal with stairs
maybe just closing the door and just having a gate on the top of the stairs. I wil have convince DH that she wont try to climb over it

OMG a lock really? I don't think that is good idea. I also don't like keeping the door closed. If you do though, just make sure you have monitor on & put the gate up there as others suggested.

i would never out a lock and i DH was probably half kidding but closing the door i def. have no problem with. I actually thought it was the best to do in case there is a fire all doors should be closed. I could be wrong though

We have a gate on the door to her room. She is not able to climb it - yet - so it's working for now.

You are probably right about a fire & keeping the door closed. It still scares me though. YOu will figure out what is best for your family.

I'd put the gate at the door-but would keep the door slightly open so I could hear her.

We have a gate at the top of our stairs. When we move DD into a toddler bed, i want to put a gate right outside her door also just in case either me or DH forget to close the gate at the top of the stairs. We always close her door at night so that wont change.
