Tummy time questions

When do you begin tummy time? They lay on their tummies and hold their heads up but hate when I lay them on the activity mat.

Do you put them with their arms propped up under their chins or head on the side?

Do you use one of those mini boppys that come with some activity mats?

How long do you do it for? Until they pitch a fit? Multiple times a day?

I know I need to do this more. One hates it, one will tollerate for a bit.

TIA!

Re: Tummy time questions

I started when she was about 10 days old.

I put her with her arms under her chin to let her figure out how to start picking her head up.

I think i used the boppy a couple of times

ANY amount of time is good, if they only tolerate it for 30 seconds, do it for 30 seconds, a few times a day. I think I remember hearing a total of 10 mins a day is good.

It is so important - I wish we had pushed it more with her when she was really little, she wound up with pretty significant flatness in the back of her head (which we were able to correct but not without a lot of stress). I know it sucks when they hate it but they'll get used to it, promise!

Tummy time questions

DD is 8 months and still doesn't like it! I did a few minutes a few times a day. I would sow her toys that played music and lights. Usually once she started to cry I would say one more song...and if she wasn't really worked up I'd do one more after that. I tried to push a little beyond her getting upset since when she was crying was the only time she'd pick her head up or turn it side to side. She was great at holding her head up but still doesn't get up on her knees! I never did the mini boppy and didn't really position her arms any special way.

Re: Tummy time questions

DS never liked it..but after having issues with the shape of his head, I never really gave him a choice after the 4 month mark..he needed to do it, even if he hated it! lol

I used the activity mat, and did get one of those mini boppys that had some toys attached to it..I also found that laying him on my bed next to me and talking to him face to face got him to build up his timing/stamina..it was difficult..he really didn't love it.

good luck!

Tummy time questions

I don't remember, but pretty early on..she hated it and I would actually get her off her back and onto me for portions of the day as well..it's conflicting whether that counts...we had the lights and music mat and after a while, she got into it...

Re: Tummy time questions

TIA!

When she was first born she would just get tummy time mostly laying on my chest. Then I would put her on her play mat or boppy, but she was never a fan of tummy time (she would spit up and cry) until she could roll over both ways (4.5 months old). After that she loved tummy time.

I would do whatever makes LO happy. Try the boppy. My DD liked tummy time on the boppy better than flat on the floor.

I wouldnt do it too much when she hated it, but would try at least once a day. She had good head control early on, so I tried not to stress it. I wouldnt do it too long because she hated it until 4.5 months old.

Re: Tummy time questions

They have these mirrors that prop up that she would like to look at herself with toys attached. I would also put a toy for her to look at in front of her or on the side. You could just put a mirror flat down too for LO to look at. I think the mirror would help

Re: Tummy time questions

I started from day 1 per my ped. He told us that he wanted the baby on his tummy at ALL times when awake and not eating or fussing. Yeah right! I just tried to do it as much as possible but I couldnt let him cry for more than 1-2 minutes.

Tummy time questions

I started after a couple of weeks on his activity mat and couldnt bear to see him struggle to keep his head up. Then he was spitting up so I stopped. I would turn him on his tummy for like a minute after diaper changes.

I did try the boppy but I was'nt sure I was doing it right. I've seen pictures of babies on boppies and they seem happy but for some reason I couldnt figure it out, my son seemed awkward on it.

What worked the best for me was putting him on my chest. Once he was ready, he started to do it on his own.

Re: Tummy time questions

My one DD hates it even laying on me. My other DD its hard to find time because she eats then sleeps and I dont want to put pressure on her tummy after she eats. I like the diaper change idea. Thanks!
