I just got over a cold and cough and all I took were cough drops, hot tea and Tylenol for a sore throat. You want to check with your dr before taking anything else.

I've been suffering with a VERY bad sinus infection/cough for well over a week now. I recommend using a neti pot and also a big bowl of steaming water (I've been putting rosemary and lavender in mine) to loosen chest congestion. It definitely helps! I also sleep with a cool mist humidifier near my face to help too.
Mucinex and Robitussin have done nothing for me!
