hospital bag
i was going to pack my bag in the next week or so, but realized there are a lot of things that need to be packed last minute (makeup, ipad, camera etc). so i plan on having a list attached to the suitcase to add in when i actually go into labor. there are also certain clothing items that i want to continue to wear (yoga pants etc) until the end...is it normal to not be fully packed for the hospital? or should i just pack it all now and stop wearing certain things for the next few weeks?
also wondering if anyone packed their own towel? i know the hospital will have, but i like the really large towels that cover me completely (the ones in hotels barely did the job pre-pregnancy and i assume that is the size the hospital has)

Re: hospital bag
i started last night. i packed everything for DD and will make a list for myself - pack what I can now but make sure I keep up with laundry so that everything is ready for when we need to leave for the hospital.
the main issue is clothes. I cant pack them now since I wear them when home.
everything else can get packed now (except makeup, camera etc)
I am bringing my own pillow but not towel. Things can get messy - let me mess up theirs

Re: hospital bag
Bringing my own (old) towel this time. I had to use 4 towels at winthrop last time they were old, thin, and scratchy. I was so sore and sensitive all I wanted was a nice comfy towel, so this time I'm bringing my own, but an older one that I won't care if it gets left behind. I am also bringing my own pillow this time. I also brought a blanket last time and was glad I did.

Didn't even think about this! But I will probably bring my flat iron. I can't survive without it.

Re: hospital bag
Well when I get around to packing my bag, I'll do the same...pack most stuff and then have a list for last minute things. I'm still in denial that I have 5 weeks left.
I wont be bringing my own towel. I will mess up theirs.
I will wash and pack extra underwear. My hospital doesn't (or didn't with my first baby) provide mesh underwear, so I bought cheap ones from Kmart.
I need to find larger flip flops to wear in the shower/walk the halls. My feet were so swollen, they didnt even fit into my slippers last time.
Oh, and I'll bring my hair dryer, but I had no desire to actually dry my hair last time. I didnt have the energy to stand and dry it in the bathroom. I did what I could, and then put it up in a pony tail. I def. did not look like one of those pretty new mom's in the hospital.

When I went to visit a friend in the hospital over the summer she had her boppy there. I'm going to bring ours, it was nice to be able to hold the baby for as long as I did without my arm going numb
I'm also going to pack my own towel and hair dryer. I would rather have them and not use them than not and wish I did.
As for the last minute stuff, my maternity yoga pants etc I think about 4-5 weeks before I'll stop wearing them and just pack them. I'll throw my camera and iPad in there as well at that time. I'll just use my laptop.
I do have to buy some nursing bras and tops still... I'm 33w today but should probably get a move on...

4-5 weeks before i'm ONLY wearing yoga pants! Actually, i'm 6w out now and that's all I'm wearing now, too!
I'm packing things like my robe, nursing stuff and everything for the baby now, but everything I'm still wearing will get packed last minute. If you go into labor, you usually still have plenty of time to shower, finish packing, etc, so I'm not worried. I'll just have a list so I know what to grab. Same thing as catching an early flight out and throwing in last minute things before vacation.
For those women talking about bringing hair dryers or flat irons - some hospitals won't let you use them anyway, so save the space and just throw some gel into your bag instead.

Re: hospital bag
i will NOT be bringing a dryer or flat iron. I did with my son and didnt use them. I just "scrunched" my hair with mousse or threw it up.
I am also purposely cutting my hair before csection date. It will be impossible for my to blow out my hair for the first 2-3 weeks (bending etc).

Re: hospital bag
just an FYI - do yourselves a favor and buy a few packs of the Wisp toothbrushes - the single use throw aways. You can keep them right by your side - dont have to get up to brush your teeth.
After a long labor or 24 hours in bed post csection, being able to brush your teeth is a GOD SEND! (guests will appreciate it too)

we did! it was VERY helpful even for elderly family members who were holding DS. Extra support was great.

Trust me - you will not be using it! The last thing you will care about is flat ironing your hair. I just threw on some mascara and lip gloss, and I wear a full face of makeup every day. You will be totally focused on your baby - not your hair.
I brought snacks for DH so he didn't have to worry about getting food, and bring clothes for DH too in case you have a long labor or the baby is born in the middle of the night and he wants to just shower there. I was induced and it was 48 hours, so the snacks and clean boxers really came in handy!
I brought clothes for DD to wear in the hospital and I will for DD2 as well - I liked dressing her in her own clothes.
And bring lots of socks - your feet are cold during labor!
I brought the boppy, but never used it. That is just me though - I could never get comfortable with it.

I wasn't exactly fully packed. I figured I could ask dh to bring anything I forgot...
I had dh bring the boppy after, we definitley used it
I had no problem with the towels at stony brook...
Eta: bring multiple outfits for the baby. All our pics of her are in the same stupid hospital blanket and onsie. They had a photographer come around and I was sad I didn't have any clothes except the one sleep-n-play we were bringing her home in

The last thing I was concerned about was doing my hair. Especially if you wind up having a c-section. You can't even get out of bed for a good 2 days. Catheter and all...

Ditto all of this! I'll also bring the Boppy this time but I'll probably leave it in the car and let DH bring it in after baby's born. Last time he brought it from home and I found it SO helpful.

I'm 33 weeks and I only wear the yoga pants to bed so I can do without and wear my pajama pants which still fit, or if they stop fitting I'll use DH's sweats.
I would love to think I have plenty of time to make it to the hospital but I'm in Western Suffolk and delivering at Mt. Sinai which is an hour and a half from my house in good weather with no traffic so I would rather not be scrambling (Girl Scout's motto "Be Prepared!' ) for last minute items knowing I have a bit of a car ride ahead of me.

I had a list of last minute items attached to my suitcase (like eyeglasses, makeup, etc) and packed those an hour before heading to the hospital.
I brought 2 towels for both DH and I. The ones at the hospital were really scratchy, so it was nice to have my own.

Do not overpack. You really do not need much.
The baby doesn't need anything. The hospital gives you what you need for the baby.
For you - clothes, toiletries and computer/camera.
