Breast Milk Pumping Question
This might be a reallllly ridiculous question. I'm registered for a Medela breast pump and plan to start out using Dr. Brown's bottles. I am confused by the whole thing. Will I pump into medela storage containers and then, when I use the milk, pour it into the Dr. Brown's bottles? I see some of the Medela kits come with bottles but I feel like I won't need those?? What is the best way to do this?

Re: Breast Milk Pumping Question
It really depends on why and when you're pumping. For example, if you're pumping to accumulate a frozen supply, you'll use the storage bags to store the BM and then transfer it to a bottle when it's time to use it to feed the baby. If you're pumping in the evening so that your DH, for example, can use it to feed a few hours later, then you might want to just use the bottle.
And other similar scenarios.

Did you use the bottles that came with the pump or the extra storage bottles kit that medela has?

Re: Breast Milk Pumping Question
Yes, you pump into the medela bottles or bags. I would then give her the Medela bottle or pour into the Dr Brown's. The bags were nice because they attach to the pump with one extra piece and it's easy to just stick that in the freezer.

The bottles that came with the pump and then I think I bought a few extra ones because she liked the Medela bottles. Also, get the Medela bags!

Re: Breast Milk Pumping Question
I never pumped into the bags directly, but I stored in the bags. I bought whichever ones were available at the store I was at or were cheapest. I liked to make sure my freezer stash was done in certain increments so I could easily take it out for when I needed it.

both. DD was a NICU preemie and the NICU gave us a ton of the really skinny bottles at first so I used that for a while. when my supply got a bit better I moved to the larger medela ones. but i never pumped more than MAYBE 4oz at once (I had low supply and was a terrible pumper) so the medela bottles were always fine for me for pumping. i also rented the hospital grade Medela Symphony at for the first 3 months and then switched to my PIS after that. the same bottles worked fine for both pumps but the tubing was different.

Yea my insurance has some stupid stipulation that it is only covered if it is medically necessary such as the baby being in NICU or being born with something going on. So stupid.

I didn't have extras and I didn't feel like I needed them. I think my pump came with 4 and that was all I used...after I pumped, I would move it to a bag or bottle to feed and wash the bottles. If I wanted to store it in the pumping bottle, I still had the other set to use.

Re: Breast Milk Pumping Question
I have 12 Medela bottles that I use for pumping/storage. I like having extra bottles because I can keep a few bottles in the refrigerator before using or freezing them. I transfer the milk from the Medela bottles either into the Born Free ones that I use for daycare or the Lansinoh freezer bags.
