Breast Feeding & Pumping Question
I plan on breast feeding once  is here.
I hear about a lot of women pumping, whether they go back to work or not.
Is pumping something that you have to do while breast feding in order to have continued success? Is it only something that is done just to have an extra supply of milk so that someone else can feed the baby as well?
If you don't pump, will it be harder to maintain how much milk you produce? I thought that if you feed on demand, your milk production would be based off of that? 
Any insight would be appreciated!

I'm not really sure if your always going to be around the baby to feed her if you would have to pump but you should post this on the parenting board too so they can give you feedback!

If you are always near baby, you do not need to pump. You are absolutely right that you will make the correct amount of milk that baby needs. You need to pump if you want to be away from baby for a few hours or if you want dad to help feed her (my DH would never do this, at least at night, which was when it would have been helpful, lol). If you don't plan to pump much, I would get a small manual pump- I liked the medela harmony.

i won't be going back to work after she is born so i will be home with her all the time. I do have some functions i know i have to attend right afterwards though, like a baby shower in March, as well as a bridal shower. is due in Feb. This is pretty much why I am asking - while I am away, I can't bring her along, so obviously, DH, or someone else will have to feed her for me and I would prefer not to use formula and have Breast Milk handy - which is why i would use the pump. Also, for any Dr. appointments I may have that I may have to be away from her for awhile...

You don't need to pump at all to be successful with breastfeeding. If you're a SAHM, the only time you'd really need a pump is if you're out for a long period of time w/o the baby. As long as you're nursing the baby on demand, your supply should be just fine.
Definitely read "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" before your baby is born. Tons of info on breastfeeding and pumping in there.

Breast Feeding & Pumping Question
I plan on doing both. Not planning on going back to work after the baby is born.
But I want him to get used to the bottle as well, so I'm HOPING to switch back and forth from breast feeding to pumping.
I also want to be able to leave the house for a little, whether it's going to doctor's appointments, getting my nails done, the gym, etc. so he's going to need to have milk readily available to him!

You don't have to pump; feeding on demand and nursing will help increase your supply more than pumping because you get more from nursing than pumping.
Most pump if they are going back to work to build a supply for when they go back to work. Or they pump so their husband or someone else can give the baby a bottle and they can sleep :)
I pumped in the beginning for I could sleep some nights and hubby could take a feeding and because I had a cracked nipple and it hurt to nurse on my side so I would pump that side and nurse on the other. It helped me heal faster. After that I would pump once in awhile so I would have bottles when I was out. I am a SAHM though so I didnt need a big supply.
I never had a problem with my supply. Just nurse nurse nurse! Good luck!

The only time you should pump is if you're more than 4 hours away from the baby in order to avoid engorgement and keep your supply up. With my second now, I hardly ever pumped bc I was hardly ever away from him. I took him everywhere with me and nursed him if need be. I am going back to work next week and I will nurse him in the morning, pump twice at work and nurse him in the evening and throughout night. I am hoping that my supply will keep up until he turns 1. Then I am done.
