Are ya ready for more tipping questions?? (For those who live in apartment buildings)
We only just moved in in November and have 2 doormen, 2 handymen and a super.
One doormen has actually been helpful to me on many occasions, but the other one is a complete waste... In fact, he makes me feel unsafe because he just waves everyone through without asking them who they are and where they are going. He is also about 95 years old and easily forgets if and when someone gets a package. I one has something delivered and only found out about it when I went to track my package on line... Should I tip him at all? Should I just give a smaller tip the I give the other one?
Should I tip the same as if we lived in the building the whole year or just a portion of it since we are very new tenants?

in my old building, there was a TON of staff (doormen, porters, handymen, super) and i would give each one a tip in a separate envelope with a little holiday card, so you can give the amount you want for who you like more/who you think deserves more. it's your call if you don't tip this doorman at all - some people are going to say you should because it's expected, some are going to say not if he doesn't deserve it. I guess I would give him a token tip, but I would also complain to whomever that he lets everyone through etc.
And I would prorate for sure. They didn't do a year's worth of work for you, so they shouldn't get a year's worth of tip. Maybe if you feel like it wouldn't be enough if you prorated, make a batch of cookies for the building staff to share?

Re: Are ya ready for more tipping questions?? (For those who live in apartment buildings)
We moved in October from one Apt building to another, and opted to tip as if we had been living in our new building for a full year. But, it's because of the following reasons:
1) The staff at our new building are MUCH more attentive and helpful. They even help us unload from taxis, which is something my old building would never do.
2) We didn't tip when we left our old building, so it's not like we are double tipping.
3) People often think of apt tipping as "paying it forward" meaning that we are tipping for good service throughout 2013.
Also, here's a link that helps with awk tipping situations (i.e., can you tip same position different amounts).

Thank you so much, everyone!
Thank you! I hope this is a pallpark that includes posh Manhattan building, because some of these amounts are obscene!

Yeah, it's a look at NYC overall.
