Electrical wiriing question...post sandy
We had water in our basement that covered our electric outlets, but our panel was fine. After we pumped the basement, the electrician came to assess and told us that we just needed to change outlets and that the wires in the metal bx cable fine since they were protected with plastic inside the cable, even though they were submerged.
This is what we did...we have been running fans etc on outlets with no problems..However, I noticed that the metal cables look rougher and have a white film from what I think is due to salt water...
My concern is will the wires eventually corrode?
TIA

Seen your post and I feel badly about all hurricane problems that many encountered. My dearest friend on the south shore had her whole home first floor renovated because of the water damage. They had a terrible contractor to do the walls but a great electrical contractor that she raves about . She was told by the electrical inspectior that all submurged wiring would need to be replaced. They had a electrical inspection the day after the wiring was finished. That was the only part of the contraction that went on schedule. Hope this info was helpful. God bless

Re: Electrical wiriing question...post sandy
how long was the water sitting on the cables? Our basement got over 6 feet of water, so we basically replaced the entire Panel. We just didnt want to chance getting an electrical fire if the cables shorted out due to saltwater errosiion. I would get a 2nd opinion.
We didnt pump out the water in our basement until 3 days after the Storm so we were knew the water ruined all outlets and connections. Last year, after Irene, the water was pumped out within 48 hours and we were fine. I think it all depends on how long the water sat on those wires.
