Can someone explain this percentile thing to me?
I have no idea what they mean. My Dr. was seriously backed up today so I opted to see the nurse practitioner instead. They told me that my LO weighed between 2½-3 pounds. When i asked if that was within range, she said she was in the 38 percentile. She explained that they want all babies to be at least in the 50 percentile, so that they are not too big and not too small.
I still have no idea what the 38 percentile means. Anyone that can explain this to me, i would seriously appreciate!!!!!!!!

I believe it means she is smaller than 62% of babies that are the same age as she is. If she were in the 50th percentile, she'd be average.

I hate when they talk percentiles, I look at it this way, your baby is 2 1/2 to 3 pounds and you have about 8 weeks to go, babies at this point gain on average 1/2 per week so you'll have on average a 7lb baby.
I was measuring in the 8th percentile at 36 weeks, my son was born 6lbs 2 oz and a perfectly healthy little boy. They scared the $hit out of me for no reason, my OB told me not to worry but those damn techs that do the measuring are so dumb sometimes.

If they had 100 babies at the exact same gestational age as your DC, your DC would be 38 out of 100 so 62 of the children would weigh more and 37 would weigh less. If you and your DH are smaller/more petite it would not surprise me that your DC was also smaller too. If you are really concerned, call your obgyn.

How many weeks are you?? Did you have an u/s or were they basing the size on how your carrying?? Honestly even with an u/s they can and typically are off a bit. As long as you are eating properly, taking your vitamins and the baby grows consistently I wouldn't worry. Some are just smaller then others!!
With DS at 31w6d they said he was 4.10 +/-7 oz. Exactly one week and one day later I had him and he was 4.11. Someone I know had an u/s at 40 weeks and was told baby was high 8's low 9's and she should induce blah blah blah. Her DD was low 7's when born.

ITA there are people of all shapes and sizes, babies too. As long as she gains at each sono, there shouldnt be anything to worry about. My twins have been hovering around the 21% (they even dropped down after the first few growth sonos) and the doctor said that's "perfect" lol. Not sure if that's perfect but I'm going to take his word for it!

the NP told me not to be concerned about it, so i'm trying not to be since she has measured on the small side throughout this whole pregnancy. DH is very tall and average build. I'm short and a bit overweight (pre pregnancy) but the last time i actually say my OBGYN he told me that since i'm, not a huge person to not expect to have a giant of a baby...

She explained that they want all babies to be at least in the 50 percentile, so that they are not too big and not too small.
It would be statistically impossible for ALL babies to be in the 50th percentile... then they would all just weigh the exact same and there would be no percentages.
At my last growth sono we were in the 42nd percentile and the doctor and tech both said that's fine.
Like a PP said, if you're in your 30th week and the baby weighs 2.5lbs and gains about a half a pound per week until your due date you're looking at a 7.5lb baby which is perfectly healthy... some babies are born at 5lbs and others weigh in at 9+ and it's all ok.

Stop worrying, everything will be fine! MAybe you will luck out and have a smaller baby to push out!!!
I know I never even hit the growth chart as a baby. I was only 5lbs 6oz, 14inches. And I was two weeks late.....I'm now 5'7 and never had any growth issues! Your daughter will be fine!!!

I was going to say this. My DD was always low in the percentile before birth. Like 22nd or so. That coupled with my borderline BP caused a little concern and I had to go for weekly NST's and growth sonos with doppler to see the blood flow to her at the end. The Dr told me they don't want to see it drop below 10% but all my tests were coming back fine- she was just measuring small. She was born at 40 weeks at 7 lbs even- very average. And very healthy. Do NOT worry!

Can someone explain this percentile thing to me?
Thanks ladies, I wasn't worried at all because they told me she was fine either way. i'm just the type of person who doesn't like knowing what something means - in this case, the percentiles..so I wanted to get a better understanding of how it worked. I figured that when she didn't explain it properly to me, I could ask you ladies to get a more straight forward response!

Re: Can someone explain this percentile thing to me?
It means that your baby is as big as or bigger than 38% of other babies that gestational age. 50% is smack dab in the middle of average. 25-75% represents the entire average range, though 16-24% is still average but in the low end of the average range, and 75%-84% is the higher end of the average range. It all follows a bell curve. 38%ile is fine. 68% of babies fall somewhere in that average range! Your baby is one of them! I also hear these measurements can be way off, so take with a grain of salt.

This exactly. 38th percentile is within the Average range. The person who said they want everyone to be at 50th percentile misspoke, bc that makes no sense. Don't worry!
