choosing your pediatrician

what factors did you take into consideration? did you meet with a few before deciding?

my dr gave me a recommendation and they are actually the same group i went to growing up. they have great office hours (7 days a week) and they are conveniently located.
do you call up to schedule a meeting with them? when do you tell them you want to use them? do they come check on the baby in the hospital after birth?

clearly i am a FTM and dont know where to begin

choosing your pediatrician

I made spots with two pediatricians one solo and one group....well the group had to change my appt and I never rescheduled bc I really liked the solo practitioner ( also heard bad reviews on group). I had a list of questions and the dr sat down with me for about 45 mins going over everything.....her practice, hours, philosophy.....she sees the baby in the hospital and then at 4 days , 2 weeks an one month.

Most importantly I really liked her and felt at ease

choosing your pediatrician

I was going to ask my ob if he recommended anyone. My friend gave birth recently at the same hospital and recommended one that also works out of that hospital, so that helps insurance wise. I'm only 21 weeks though so not too sure when I should start approaching this.

IMO I would do it asap. I am 33 1/2 weeks and started doing it this week. It's very annoying to get appointments to meet and great before I am due. Start now you have nothing to lose.

Re: choosing your pediatrician

Got recs on here, checked with ins and asked my ob for recs... narrowed it down to 2. Scheduled consults with both... wasn't satisfied with either.
Looked for more recs on here & from a friend, checked with ins, scheduled 2 more meetings. We are going with the last one we met with.
Obv insurance was important, location - although the one we are going with is the furthest out of all 4 (but they are affiliated with the hospital closest to us/where im delivering which def was a factor). I looked at office hours, cleanliness & office set up. Drs policy on vaccinations, after hours/on call policy and basically just their bedside manner/personality when we met with them.
obv we will have to see how they handle a problem when/if it arises - this is all we can do for now.

You would have to check with the ped you choose as to their policy but all of the ones we met with come to the hospital every day after u have the baby (but thats where the hospital affiliation would matter) and they all told us that you dont have to do anything to become part of the practice before having the baby. Once you go to the hospital in labor, the hospital asks you if you have a ped, and if you tell them a name, they notify the dr/practice once you give birth.

Hth.

Went to my first pediatrician consulation this week (at 28weeks). We have 3 more to meet with. I asked my OB for recommendations; and then other friends who have had babies recently. I wanted a dr. affilated with my hospital so they can see the baby right away. I came armed with a list of questions; but the doctor pretty much covered everything when she was talking to us.

We have another appointment next week at 30 weeks. And two more throughout the month of November (I'm due in Jan).

Location.

I did not meet with anyone and just picked one. I figured I can always change.
