For those of you NOT doing cord blood banking...
Is there any reason, other than expense, that you wouldn't mind sharing. Been doing some research on the issue and trying to get a sense of any possible cons other than financial concerns.

Re: For those of you NOT doing cord blood banking...
I’m planning on donating my cord blood instead of banking it. I feel that the likelihood of my baby using his own cord blood will be slim to none. I have a huge family history of cancer and if god forbid he gets cancer, he will not be able to use his own cord blood anyway. I rather donate it knowing it can save some lives.

Re: For those of you NOT doing cord blood banking...
a fellow LIFer send me this article that i found very interesting:
cord blood banking
i also started to read more blog posts etc and find that there are often times people choose to donate the cord blood once the baby is born (so it doesnt cost them money to store it yet it doesnt go to waste) and often time they are told the sample isnt even good enough to be donated. i would hate to spend all the money on banking it to need it years down the line and be told it isnt usable

I just read the article......wow! That is disturbing, my brother was almost "forced" to bank his daughters cord blood this past april when she was diagnosed with cancer while still in the womb. She had a nueroblastoma and they said the cord blood would be used to help her if it ever comes back down the line. To think they can't even use it is CRAZY! What a scam! I'm so angry right now, that was $3000 they did not have!

yeah i found it pretty disturbing when i read the article...however keep in mind this is just one article and i also do not know how long ago it was written. perhaps now they do testing on the cord blood before it gets banked (i have no idea since i opted to not even look into it). if it is something you are considering, i would speak to companies and get more information and not go based on just this one article.

Re: For those of you NOT doing cord blood banking...
I asked to donate mine when I was pregnant with my first in 2010 and my ob told me they don't do that. I can't remember if she said they didn't do it in Ny at all or just at Good Sam where I delievered.

we are not going to do this, mainly because of the many reasons listed in this article as well. the chances of a child needing the stem cells are very low (lets hope it never happens at all) and the chances of being able to use it later on in life and actually finding that the stem cells are usable at all are slim to none. But its a very personal decision, so to each his own. I would like to try to do delayed cord cutting after the birth though

Re: For those of you NOT doing cord blood banking...
I would have been interested but DH thinks it's a scam. There is no convincing him otherwise. I actually never saw the article listed above before but maybe it proves he's right.

Crashing- These are the same reasons I did not do it. To add to what you said about prob not using it later in life- right now they don't even have the technology to keep it past 20yrs, so it's like the last kick in the arse if u ask me, lol. You're basically hoping they figure out how to keep it and hoping they figure out something it's good for and also hoping they learn how to maybe replicate it bc what they get from a baby is not enough for an adult to use. I pretty much find the whole thing one notch below a scam.
Re delayed cutting, my ob would not do it- looks like there are some negatives to that as well.

Re: For those of you NOT doing cord blood banking...
Sorry to be crashing.
I don't know much about blastomas, but DS is in remission from lymphoma and we did bank his cord blood (and his two siblings). We are very thankful that he responded to chemotherapy, but the next step would have been SCT - he WOULD be able to use his own.
Most children's Leukemia and Lymphomas are NOT genetic and are caused by a mutation after birth. The cord blood would not be infected.
I just wanted to clarify that, b/c the article from Parenting seemed a bit biased.

This is why we didn't do it. My OB was really pushing it too, which was super annoying. Another reason I was reluctant to do it. I know these OBs get kick backs from these companies so they push everything.
