Need idea for displaying family photos over the fireplace

I was set on a mirror over the fireplace, but apparently my hubby hates this look. He wants to put our kids picture there. I have taken the kids Bitthday pics each year up until 5 years old of them standing with the number. He wants to get a bunch of 8 by 10 frames and arrange them above the fireplace? I also have a larger ( maybe 11 by 14) picture of the kids from last Christmas that I had put on to canvas. Was thinking of putting this in the center. Or I was thinking of taking that pic that I had put on canvas and just getting it made even bigger and putting it in a frame. Help! I was all set on the mirror and he ruined it. Thanks, if you are still reading.

This is how I displayed the pictures over our fireplace in our previous home. I didn't want to put nails in the walls since we were putting it on the market. I really love the way it came out and kinda wish I could do it in our current home but we can't.

So what is that extra white backing? Did you add that to the room or was that there?

I added everything that was white. That whole wall was originally brick. I found something similar on Pinterest.

Basically we made a frame right about the fireplace ( it touches the ledge if it makes sense). Then we added 2 pieces of wood to make it look like 3 sections. On top is a crown moulding and base moulding that we flipped. The main ledge is different moldings that we put together.
