Magical Shot to dry up Breastmilk?

my sister keeps telling me that her SIL signed some form at her hospital (somewhere in LI, don't know which hospital) because she did not want to breastfeed. So they gave her some shot that would magically dry up her breast milk so she wouldn't have to suffer until it dried up on its own.

I have never ever heard of this and don't even know if this is true.
I asked one Dr. about it and they had no idea what I am talking about.

Anyone else ever heard of this? Or is my sister's SIL making stuff up? (sidenote: this woman lies about everything and has been known to make up outrageous lies so i wouldn't be surprised if this is one of them)

I know there is something that the doctor can give you to dry up the milk. I don't know what it is and I'm pretty sure they are so pro breast feeding now they don't give it all the time.

Magical Shot to dry up Breastmilk?

I intend to BF, but i had never heard of this shot and wan't to know if it was even for real. this first came up 2 years ago when my SIL had her DD, i asked her if she was going to get this shot and she had no idea what i was talking about. She asked her Dr. and he told her he didn't know what this was.
SIL just gave birth to her DS last Saturday and before she gave birth this time, I asked her again if she had heard about this shot (she did not BF DD and will not BF DS) and she was not offered this at her hospital this time around either

I think years ago (like 30), there was something like this, but not now. I've never heard of anyone getting a shot.

Ditto. MIL said they would basically routinely give it to women in her day to dry up the breast milk so they could just use formula. They told them it was more sanitary. Chat Icon It's pretty scary how little they used to know.

I have never heard of anyone getting this shot in this day and age but I guess anything is possible.

Magical Shot to dry up Breastmilk?

Thanks ladies, I just read onlinie that the shot was banned in 1994 because of its ineffectiveness and because it would cause some women's blood pressure to drop dangerously low, which could have lead to stroke

Yes! I don't know if it exists anymore but my mother had it done because she did not want to breast feed me.

Magical Shot to dry up Breastmilk?

There is a shot. I did not breast feed and the day i went to my Ob to get my staples out from my Csection I asked him what I could do with my boobs cause they were killing me. He siad there is a shot but the side effect is blood clots. FOr me I could nto risk it since I had clots during my pregnancy but it is out there.

But to tell you the truth my sore boobs were gone in 2 days and no issues.

Yes my mom said she got it for both me (1977) and my sister (1985). I breast fed last time but planning to formula feed this time so I am not looking forward to the pain.

It's not magic; it's probably estrogen. Excess estrogen prohibits BM production. That's why BFIng mamas can only use certain kinds of birth control.

I'm surprised that the doc is even offering something like this. What if she changes her mind?

well my sister's SIL had this offered to her 3+ years ago. she knew she didn't want to BF so she took it. which doesn't make sense tome because everything i have read online shows that it was banned from being given in 1994. So not sure how her hospital gave it to her in 2009.

It doesn't stop breastmilk from ever coming in, supposedly it was just supposed to stop it from occuring after this most recent pregnancy. but that were lots of cases where women complained that it only stopped them from producing for a few days or a week and then production started up again. Basically the cons outweighed the pros...

It was the standard operation procedure in most US hospitals in the 60s and 70s. It took away the possibility of BFing for a lot of women back in the day when almost everyone FF their baby.

Re: Magical Shot to dry up Breastmilk?

My mom was telling me how she got it after having me and my sis- both in the 1970s.
She said they then found it was linked to cancer...great!
I thnk they may have taken that shot off the market and if there is one now, it's something else.
Personally I wasn't offered it but wouldn't have taken it anyway- the thought of something like that with God knows what side effects- I'd rather just let it dry up on it's own.
Mine only took a few days.
