DH and I are planning a short 5-6 day trip to CA before heading to Maui in May. We'd like to hit San Francisco and maybe 2 days/1 night staying in Napa or Sonoma to do the winery thing.

Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels/winery tours, etc. in Napa or Sonoma?

TIA

DH and I stayed here on part of our honeymoon and it was fantastic: Blackbird Inn

And this was where I had the greatest meal of my life! ubuntu

You're welcome :)

I was a bit iffy on staying in a B&B, but this one was perfect...very welcoming, but not overbearing at all.

Enjoy! It's a great getaway.

Oh! Also, this was a wonderful shop where DH and I bought a variety of bottles and had them shipped home: Backroom Wines Great staff, very informative, and though we had visited some of the tasting rooms, we ended up buying most of our wine from Napa at this shop because we just had such a great experience there. :)

Thanks so much for this.

Did you by any chance take any of the wine tasting tours? DH and I are thinking of trying to find a limo to take us around for the day so we don't have to drive. We'd like it to be just the two of us instead of a bus tour.

Definitely go to Sterling Vineyard. You have to pay, but it is so well worth it - I think it was $25 pp and an extra $10 for the "VIP" tasting - I know it seems like a lot, but go for it. You won't be disappointed. You take a sky tram up to the vineyard and the views are beautiful. And the area for the tasting is so pretty too - kind of built to look like your on a Greek Island. The wines they poured for the "regular" tasting were very good but the ones in theVIP package were even better.

I didn't take a tour but there were certainly a LOT of options for that. I had a guide to SF/Napa and there were listings in there, and when we checked in at the B&B, they had a whole table of info, pamphlets, coupons, etc for the vineyards, tasting rooms, and tours.

We stayed at the Wine Country Inn in Napa and had a really nice time. It's next to Duckhorn and they also offer wine tours directly through the Inn. When we went, we were the only people signed up for the tour, so it became a private one totally customized to our tastes.

I cannot wait to do the wine country thing!!! Has anyone been to both Sonoma and Napa? Are they very different? Which one is better? We're trying to decide if we should spend a day in each or add another day in Maui - tough decision I know Chat Icon

We stayed at the Solage Calistoga, which was incredible and one of my favorite hotels ever. http://www.solagecalistoga.com/. The restaurant Solbar is also amazing. We also enjoyed meals at Red and Bottega. For wineries, there are so many good ones, I agree that Duckhorn is worth going to, also Cakebread, Pine Ridge. Have fun!

Re: SF/Napa Valley/Sonoma

we just got back 3 weeks ago. We did san francisco for 1 night and napa for 2 nights. We stayed at the marriot and used our points. Chat Icon

We did 2 tours. Robert Mandavi and BV-Beaulieu Vineyard (my husband loves their wine). The wine tour at Robert Mandavi was amazing. Loved it.

I have to say my favorite wineries were Joseph Phelps and Domaine Carneros. I'm not a sparkling wine kind of gal, but for the scenery alone it was worth it. LOVED LOVED Joseph Phelps. Loved the relaxed setting outside with the umbrellas, lounge chairs, benches, etc etc. So pretty.

Oh and we loved the town of Yountsville. Cute little place with many of the upscale restaurants, bakery and a good place for breakfast.

Everything was like 15 minutes away from everything. It was very easy to drive around.

We stayed at the Marriott as well.

I preferred the downtown area of Sonoma to Napa. I love the square there.

We did a tour at Beringer and tastings at Silver Oak, Chimney Rock and Stags Leap. I preferred the smaller vineyards because it was a good opportunity to sample some of the more expensive wines.

I've been to both Sonoma and Napa. I heard Napa was so much more touristy but it wasn't that bad. I happened to go to pricier wineries in Napa than Sonoma but really, it was all the same.

I would just pick one--do either Sonoma or Napa.

BTW, I did a hot air balloon ride in Napa---you do it at around 6am and are done before the wineries even open up--I HIGHLY recommend.
