Spinoff to Rug
I have an open layout - living room, kitchen, and dining area in one big space. I would like to get an area rug for my living room and also for my dining area for under my table. Since it's technically the same room, I have no idea how to coordinate. Do I get the same rug for both areas? I'm so lost when it comes to this kind of thing.

Re: Spinoff to Rug
Textural rugs such as shag rug are often the best choice two combine two rugs for a larger room, since the loose fibers of the shag hide the seams between each rug. Rugs with large-scale patterns make the most visual impact. Carry out these steps: 1. Purchase two rugs that are similar in design or color. 2. Place rubber floor grip mats under the area you wish to position the rugs. 3. Place the two rugs on the floor, flush against one another. The grip mats will hold the rugs in place, preventing them from separation. 4. Sew the two rugs together for a more permanent option. Thread an upholstery needle with a thick upholstery thread that matches the color of the rugs. Push the thread up through the bottom of one rug then down through the opposite rug. Continue until you have stitched the two together, and then position the new creation in place on the floor.

Re: Spinoff to Rug
I don't think you need to get the same rug. I don't have a true open layout, but my living room and formal dining room are open to each other in one place. It's like an L-shaped area, where the side of the living room opens up into the dining room.
I have hardwood floors and two different area rugs ... one in the living room area under my couch and coffee table, and one under my dining room table. They are a similar style (a traditional "oriental" style look), and some of the colors overlap, but they are different. The dining room rug has darker colors (I didn't want anything too light under my table) and a different pattern.
As long as the rugs are going to be in separate areas of your big open great room and "go" together (have some overlapping colors and are a complementary style), then I think it will look great. Personally, I don't like everything so matchy-matchy. A little variation makes for more visual interest and can help differentiate different areas of your large open space.

Re: Spinoff to Rug
Thanks!
This is what the room looks like... empty anyway. Ignore the pink wall because that is no longer pink. Where I took the picture is where the living room rug would go. The chaise part of my sectional is in between the 2 areas and where the first ceiling lamp is where the dining area rug will go.
So complementary colors but not the same rug still works, right?
ETA: Here is a picture of the living room side of the area.
