Genetic testing
My dr called me today with results of blood work that I got taken at an appointment. She told me they found I was a carrier for cystic fibrosis, early carrier of fragile x and I've been exposed to kitty litter. (I've never changed kitty litter in my life) she told me to make an appointment with a geneticist this week. I have an appointment Friday. Has anyone else gone through this or heard of this? I was just wondering why to expect/outcomes etc. thanks

Re: Genetic testing
The genetisist will just go over everyting with you, what each finding means. For example for cystic fibrosis to be an issue, your DH would need to be a carrier as well, so they may recommend him being tested.
As far as kitty litter issue, maybe you came back pos. for toxoplasmosis, this is not just caused by kitty litter, but can also be from under cooked meats. But Dr. explanation is vague.
The BEST thing to do is make that appt. they will go over each thing with you, risks, what it means. It is amazing how much information they will have for you, and what testing can be done.
I know information can be scary sometimes, but it is all to promote the best outcome for your baby.
Genetic counseling is all encompassing, and provides you with a LOT of information.
Praying all works out just fine for you and your LO.

Re: Genetic testing
I am a carrier for cystic fibrosis (I found this out when pg with DC #1). DH was tested and he is not a carrier so its not an issue.

Re: Genetic testing
Try not to freak out and just listen with an open-mind as to what they have to say at the genetic counseling. We had to go bc I am a carrier for fragile x as well, but my numbers just had me in the grey zone, which means eventually, one of my grandchildren could potentially have a child with fragile x. I went to Madonna and they were very thorough but did not seem like alarmists. (Just wanted to say I had no idea they were testing for that stuff either and was blindsided when they recommended the genetic counseling.) Could the kitty litter exposure just mean you have immunity to toxoplosmosis? I know they say you can be positive for it and therefore have immunity from previous exposure, which I understood as a good thing. I think it means you don't need to worry about exposure then.

Thank you. And as for the kitty litter part I am still unsure. She said do you have a cat, I said yes. She asked if I changed the kitty litter. I said no. And then I believe she said I've been exposed. But I was so taken back with everything he said, I really have no idea.

Re: Genetic testing
Most cat owners have been exposed... From what I understand, it's not an issue if you were exposed to it. That's not the same as having toxoplasmosis.

I found out I was a carrier for fragile x, which can be passed on to your Lo regardless of whether or not your husband is a carrier. If you knew your repeats, I'd be able to give you more information. If you can call your dr and find out your cgg repeats it would be helpful for me to guide you.
Fm means forum mail :)

Well we went to the geneticist yesterday. My numbers for for fragile x was 45 and normal is 44 so that has me relieved. Dh got his bloodworm done for cf. we will get results for that in 10 days. Id he is a carrier, there is a 25%chance that baby will have it. Now I just have to talk dr about the kitty litter thing which my mind is still boggled about. Thanks ladies
