Is this a good gift?

My next door neighbor has had a tough year. Her husband just died after a long illness. She's very good to us and she puts up with us having a dog who barks a lot. She invited us over for Christmas Eve. She knows that we are Jewish and that we don't have set plans for Christmas. I know she likes to drink wine when she has her family over but I want to do something else besides bring wine. She uses her fireplace, esp. when she has people over & she does like to socialize. Do you think that having firewood delivered is a nice gift? She's older and has back problems, so even though she still gets around I thought it might be nice to bring it to her or have it delivered. I would have it to her soon, not right on Christmas. Are people usually picky about which wood they use? She does not seem to have a big supply of it ready. Her kids are my age so would it be bad if I just told them what I was thinking and asked for an opinion? The kids come by very often and we talk to them. I figured that they do a lot for her so us getting firewood can take one thing off the list.

I think that's a very thoughtful gift! I don't have a fireplace, so I don't know if people are picky about what wood they use or not, but maybe that's something you can ask her kids as well?

I agree it's a good gift! If she likes to use her fireplace, it's something that she'll really appreciate and get lots of use and enjoyment out of.

We have a fireplace, and we use it SO much from Oct-March/April. Wood can be expensive. I know my dh orders ours online, and they drop it on the driveway, and he brings it into the garage.

I don't think we are particular about the wood or get a special kind, but you can always ask her kids. Or you could even casually ask her - pretend a friend just got a fireplace and was wondering about wood. You can ask where she gets hers and if there is a particular type she likes to get (so you can pass the tip on to your "friend"!).

I think that is a great gift!! Just make sure it is a good place that had nice dry wood. We bought half a cord last year and most of it was wet and we were so upset. We couldn't use half of it.

I think that is a really cool gift. What if you threw in two mugs and some hot chocolate to enjoy by her fire with a friend or a book to read by her fire?

Thanks everyone. I think DH and I will go ahead with it but we will ask her kids first. Maybe she has a lot of it in a place where I did not notice but I have a feeling they just buy at the supermarket as needed.

Make sure it's seasoned & grab one if those long lighters or Restoration Hardware has a really cute "book of matches" it looks like a library book but its filled with long matches. Target carries fireplace stuff too like pinecone fire starters etc. I'd love if someone did that for us :)
