Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
So I am crazy. I had the dr run all the blood clotting tests because I am so worried. I was scared but figured they'd come back normal. I have two kids, both with c-sections, both pregnant on the first try.
Got the results today, he said my antithrombin 3 is low, I am going to call tomorrow to get the written results. Also he said the lab said a MTHTR (sp?) mutation, but they wrote next to it, it's of no significance. Also my ana came up a low positive, but that happens with every test and they've ruled out most AI.
My question, anyone here have this? No one in my family has had a blood clot, except my grandma after open heart surgery. I of course googled and it basically said if you have this low anti thrombin there's an 80% chance you will get a blood clot. I am freaking out. I asked my OB and he said we can still get pregnant, I'll just have to take baby aspirin.
I am calling a hemotologist tomorrow and praying that the test is wrong.

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
I have the MTHFR homozygous mutation. I've heard so many different opinions on this mutation. My RE was the one that discovered it and sent me to a hematologist to run more tests. Doctors used to believe that the mutation caused early miscarriages and women used to be prescribed lovenox for it but apparently newer research shows the mutation is dangerous only if you're homocysteine levels are abnormal. My hematologist said that if you tested the entire population for the MTHFR gene mutation half of the people tested would have it. My opinion is there isn't enough research on this, I'm just regurgitating what i was told.

The low antithrombin 3 worries me the most. From what I read its basically a given you will get a blood clot from this being low

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
sometimes when they do a bunch of blood tests the numbers are slightly off and you may want to test it by itself ... My protien-s (stuff in blood to help it from not clotting) was low - 31 (normal people shouldnt go under 60 and at pregnancy it shouldnt go under 35) when they re-tested it it was at 41 but the doctor still put me on baby aspirin... we'll see how its going .. I'm going to the hematologist on thursday. I know its scary but they have so many tests now to detect blood clots and I wouldnt get that worked up until they retest.

Would you still get pregnant? Next week we were trying. I asked my OB. He said he'd be reluctant to put me on birth control but if I do get pregnant I'd have to to take a baby aspirin. He said he wasn't worried at all.

i have similar issues and cannot take hormonal BCP.
i was on lovenox my entire first pregnancy (a blood thinner) but was not put on it this pregnancy since "protocol has changed."
All is well!

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
I am sitting here crying. I want another baby so badly and I am just worried if I get pregnant that something will happen to me or the baby. Do I risk it? I know it's only something I can answer but I don't know. I was also reading up on it and its said to be hereditary and family members would have had blood clots or something but not one person has (knock on wood) can this test be wrong?

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
i have most clotting orders u can name
wherever i go a blood clot seems to follow
u can def get pregnant whenu have these,u just cannot when u actually have a clot
well i should say u cannot do fertility treatments when u have one, when i had a dvt i was not allowed to use fertility meds bc u can clot more
u should see a hemo along wiht ur ob..they designed a plan for me and i get monitored all the time bc my d dimer keeps going up bc u do naturally clot more with pregnancy so if u have a clotting disorder u need to be be watched
i am on meds and they help,i hope your test is wrong but if it is not do not worry it can be treated
eta nobody in my fam has blood clotting issues

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
I don't even think it's just the pregnancy stuff that is scaring me, it's the whole thing. I am pretty sure we are not going to try again. I just can't take the stress, I will be going crazy the whole nine months. I am devastated.
I am going to see a hematologist on Monday. I am just so depressed. This has been my worst fear forever, with no warrant behind it! No one in my family has ever had a blood clot.
I only mention the family thing, because the Antithrombin 3 low levels, is a hereditary thing, so most people find out they have it when a family member has blood clots and gets diagnosed. I am praying that it was wrong.

Honestly if they test the general population... EVERYONE will come up with SOMETHING. Usually it doesn't impact you. Since you have no previous risk factors to suspect you have a problem, if I were you I would not let this bother you.

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
First breathe!!!!! U r healthy! Do not stress!
Like this lovely lady above me said if u tested the world u know what would come up?
Also u said u have 2 children, both c section and no prob conceiving
Pregnnacy makes u clot even more so if there would have been a major issue they would have seen it
A lot of us who have clotting issues have trouble getting pregnant and of course holding it
They have gotten me in the hospital, sticking myself twice a day with needles and to lose multiple pregnancies
It is good u r seeing a hemo but. Please do not stress! Walking around thinking u r going to get a blood clot is not a good thing and this is from someone who has had them and continues to even while pregnant
Read again what u wrote,no warrant behind it

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
That kind of made me feel better.
I think this hit me most because it's this crazy fear that I have, like I am constantly checking my legs and being crazy.
I almost wish I never got tested...

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
Thanks for all the support. I know it's crazy and sounds so silly. The OB said I could have another baby, I would have to take baby aspirin everyday and he said he would be reluctant to give me birth control, but he said he's not worried at all. I am going to talk to the hematologist and hopefully things will work out.
I know it sounds silly I am sure, especially to you guys who have had a blood clot, it's just one of those things that my crazy anxiety ridden mind latched onto, and won't let go!

Re: Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
I do not have any known clotting disorders (had tons of test for them) but during my pregnancy I had 3 clots.
I had to be put on thinners and was monitored.
I now see a hemotolgist and can never be put on BCPs. The risk is just to high. I do not take anything but the minute I get PG again I have to see my hemotolgist and I will be back on thinners for the pregnancy.

Those with blood clotting disorders come in!
I am on baby aspirin for life......this is all I was on until I was 5.5 weeks pregnant then I added in the shots of lovenox. If this is your week to get pregnant ask your ob but I think you are fine to try especially since you had two non complicated pregnancies
I see you say you got tested but did any medical reason prompt you to get tested?

Nothing but my craziness, lol. That's it. I had made an appt with my OB just to go over my fears of the c-section and blood clots, and he said to put my mind at ease he would test, which I thought was perfect, I knew all this was in my head and I thought this would just be another thing saying it's all in my head, and I will be fine.
My OB said that I would probably take a baby aspirin while pregnant. I got an appt with the hemo for tomorrow, so hopefully she will let me know! I am hoping it's a fluke, lol

lol, i know!!! I am THE crazy!!
Everything came back okay, except the Antithrombin 3, the ANA was a low positive and some MTHTR mutation that was of no significance.
They took 12 vials of blood I think, there was a huge list!!
