La Bottega Restaurant

Anyone know if there cheese is pasturized? Im soo annoyed with them. I went to the one in Garden City who told me NO the cheese is not pasturized.. Then ordered lunch at the one in Plainview a couple weeks ago who said YES the cheese is pasturized.. Now today called back the Plainview one and ordered a salad and went to double check its pasturized then the guy tells me no he doesn't think so :( So now IM confused!!! Chat Icon Does anyone eat there or would know the answer? Should I just stay away all together or get a panini that is heated up! lol

I feel like most restaurants have have pasteurized cheese. I doubt either employee really knows for sure. I would just order something else to be on the safe side.

it may be easier asking them where the cheese is from. if it's made in the us, it's most likely pasteurized. if it's imported from europe, it may not be.

I will ask my friend who works there! But just so you know all of the la botega are privately owned so it's possible they are different.

i think it also depends on the TYPE of cheese. for instance, fetta and I believe gorganzola are usually not. Most others are.

La Bottega Restaurant

This sounds like what happened to me last weekend...DH and I went out to dinner and they gave parmiggiano reggiano cheese with the bread, so I asked the bus boy if it was pasteurized and he said "oh yea def" so I ate some. Then the waiter came and I asked him about it, and he said "probably not bc it's imported from Argentina". I was soo mad!!

When I go to La Bottega I just order something that's cooked

Apparently people tell me any cheese in the US has to be pasturized by law!! but I don't really believe it since when I call restaurants it seems to be their cheese is not pasturized..

I called mama teresas last week and they told the their fresh mozz was pasturized but there regular shredded moZz was not!!! How is that possible makes no sense!

They can def. sell non-pasteurized cheese in the US. Before pregnancy I used to get unpasteurized or raw cheese from Whole Foods all the time

parmigianno reggiano is a hard cheese so its ok. its the soft cheese you need to be careful of

Re: La Bottega Restaurant

I think people (especially men - no offense but its true), do not understand what "pasteurized" means. Even if they make the mozzarella themselves, if its made from milk from the U.S. it is most likely pasteurized unless they have a cow out back that they just milked! To be on the safe side I try to check the labels myself, when in doubt (or when someone doesn't seem 100% sure) I will go with something heated or just ask to substitute to cheddar or a different hard cheese.

I tend to stay away from any dish with questionable cheeses while pregnant. The food will still be there in a few months and in the meantime, I'd rather not have to worry.

Re: La Bottega Restaurant

So are their paninis with fresh mozz ok since they are heated? (assuming it may not be pasturized?)
