picking your daycare center

DH and i went to look at a few places and have different opinions. I am wondering what were some key factors that helped you pick your child's daycare program?

DH thinks I am being too picky on odd things...
one center had all certified teachers for infants which seems rare, but when we were in one of the rooms a little girl was playing with a runny nose and the teacher didnt wipe her nose (we were in there for about a good 10 minutes) and the director didnt wipe her nose either - they were both playing with her and had to notice it. i thought that was kinda gross so for me that isnt my top choice.

we have narrowed it down to 2 and will go back in a month or so, i was just wondering if maybe there are things we should look for that we may not have on our first visit

Re: picking your daycare center

things that helped us decide:

-overall feeling/comfort level with the place and the workers

-cleaniness of the office

-security

-hours, pick-up time, latest pick-up, overtime fees, etc. (this was huge for us because we work alot of hours)

-we preferred place that would pre-mix formula rather than us mix it and send it b/c that seems wasteful and not very helpful to us

-we preferred a place that supplied linens (some wanted us to provide 5 clean crib sheets each week) giving us more work

-no crib sharing

-overall atmosphere/sense of order/organization at the center

-price/discounts

-form of payment

-medicine administration

-location closer to work

-insured and NYS registered

I don't think it's so important for the teacher to be certified, particularly for newborns. But you do want to be sure they are all CPR and first aid trained.
