NYC teachers....
I am due May 12th. Which means if LO is on time I would be out until the end of the year. If your 6 or 8 weeks ends during the summer do you get paid? Or do you have to go in for one day at the end to get paid?
I didn't tell my school yet because I'm not 12 weeks yet.

Re: NYC teachers....
You only get paid for the 6-8 weeks if you have the sick days to cover it. I *think* you should get paid over the summer.

Re: NYC teachers....
Going in for one day at the end of June wouldn't make a difference. Payroll closes out in May. It really comes down to how many days you have in your CAR.
I stopped working on May 12th when I had my son but had enough days to carry me through the middle of June. I should not have been paid the last two weeks of June because my days ran out. I got paid because payroll had already closed out. They can't make any changes at that point. I was paid throughout the entire summer but then my paycheck was docked when we came back in September to make up for those two weeks.
With my daughter the opposite happened. I had gone off payroll because I ran out of days but came back June 1st. They weren't able to put me back on payroll until September so I didn't get paid at all for the summer or the time I went back in June until September.

Then you continue to get paid. Let's say you go out June 1st and only have 7 days. You would still get paid normally until September and then they would dock you in September for the time you got paid but shouldn't have in June.

You get paid for the sick days you have during the 6-8 weeks. You also get paid for any holidays such as memorial day. You can borrow up to 20 days to use during the 6-8weeks if you don't have enough sick days.

So im due May 12th. I will have about 7 days then. Lets say I take 6 weeks and that takes me until the last week of school. I know I will be negative days. I still wont get paid for the summer? That doesn't make sense to me. Can something please explain this all. Im so confused and really upset.

I got screwed. DS was born 8/8. I already had put in my time to get paid for summer so I didn't technically get paid when he was born. The 6 paid weeks I got paid for was my regularly scheduled summer pay. I am now off payroll for the next 6 weeks. It's so confusing.

Re: NYC teachers....
Its so weird. Because we really get no leave compared to even teachers on LI. You would think the union wouldn't allow this. I was told well get preg. so you have the baby during the summer when I had DS. You would think with the major and all of his breast feeding opinions he would be giving teachers a good maternity leave that doesn't leave us with negative 20 days!
I really love teaching in the city but this really annoys me!

I know ot sucks!! I had my baby the week before school started so i am on leave now. I had 21 days in my bank so i was able to cover my leave. When you are negative days I believe you still get a day each month that you can use and whatever is left over at the end of the year will go to paying back the borrowed days instead of into your CAR.

But we can take up to four (unpaid) years per child...
Maternity leave policies in other fields suck just as badly as ours. It's an American thing. I want to move to England and get 6 months paid leave!

You will probably still get paid over the summer it might just be less than normal.
We work 10 months but our pay is broken down to pay us 12 months. If you dont work 1 month (say not enough days in car to get paid) Your entire summer money should not be cut (i would think)
And you can borrow up to 20 days o that could help get you through til summer
How many days will you have in car by then?

7 days... so I will have 27 all together. I just hate the idea of being -20 days. It is what it is. When I had DS I had 30 days saved. I don't see that ever happening again!

Have you been to the maternity workshop? It explains everything...I HATE our maternity "leave" also because I resent taking my sick time to have a child..

Re: NYC teachers....
Call the UFT office and ask to speak to a maternity leave specialist. They are very helpful and will answer all of your questions.
Here's what they told me if you have days in your bank you will get paid for your 6/8 weeks of maternity leave. If you dont you can borrow up to 20 so that you can stay on payroll.
If you stay out longer then the 6/8 weeks you will be removed from payroll and they will start to reduce your summer pay.

You can buy the days back. If you buy a day or two a month, you'll be out of the negatives by the end of the year.

I went out on maternity on 4/16, had DD on 4/25. I used all of my days and then borrowed 20 days. I stayed out through the end of the year and went on absent without pay for 6 days and I got my regular summer pay.

And you would think a profession that employs so many women would come up with a maternity leave system that makes sense.

I don't understand why this has to be so confusing!! I'm so frustrated with the whole process, and I haven't even told my school yet. My union rep and my secretary are both run the maternity workshops, so at least they will hopefully know what they are talking about and lead me in the right direction. I only have 9 days in CAR (already used one day this year for the CVS test), but I'll at least gain another 5 days before I'm out.
Few questions - if you borrow and pay back your days - how much exactly is that? Do you still get your sick days when you are out on leave? Also, someone mentioned that if you stay out for 12 weeks, they will start docking my summer pay? Blah!
