Re: If you have all wood floors with kids and pets
we have an area rug in our living room, and both the kids rooms.
The playroom is carpeted, but the majority of the house is wood floors. I have a 4yo, 1yo and a med sized dog.

We have an open floor plan so we use the area rugs to help define the spaces: under DR table TV area formal DCs bedrooms have smaller area rugs and the foyer hallway has a runner

me too, just redid the floors and I have a 125 lb dog. I'm planning on doing the same. This has been such a major worry for me. I still haven't figure out where I'm going to put his bowl yet, he slobbers water all the place whenever he drinks.

Google splat mat, they are made for under highchairs and come in tons of colors and patterns. I bet you could use one under the dogs food area. Or, I have this rug in my kitchen, which is indoor/outdoor, so it can get messy and be hosed off. I love it, and it is under $20. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Damask-Polypropylene-Area-Rug-2-x-3/2992602/product.html

No kids yet, but have a big dog. Pretty much have one in every room: kitchen, under dining room table, living room, bedrooms, hallway.

We have a small area rug in the LR. We are putting foam mats in the playroom (once we set it up) and an area rug in the den.

Re: If you have all wood floors with kids and pets
We have wood throughout the house, no wall to wall carpeting. So far we only have 2 area rugs, on in the living room and one in the family room. I have more for aesthetics than anything. I like the texture and color it brings to the room.
I do plan on adding them to the kids bedrooms and I think one in the hall way upstairs.

Re: If you have all wood floors with kids and pets
We have very large area rugs in the great room and the living room. I've been wanting to get one for DD's room and for ours but just haven't done it yet. We have a carpet runner on the stairs for safety (our hardwood stairs were SO slippery and hard to fall down) and the finished basement is carpeted.

Re: If you have all wood floors with kids and pets
i have two kids and had a dog. my newly laid floors lasted about 4 months, scratches all over. but, i have dark wood, so it's very visible. i have to regularly fill in with wood pen...
It's disheartening, but they are lovely... lots of maintenance.
