has anyone purchased land upstate NY recently?
Now that SD is in college in Albany we have been thinking about buying acreage somewhere in that region. My grandparents had a summer home near Cobleskill so I'm pretty familiar with that area. Just wondering, did you use a real estate agent, find a listing on your own(craigslist) or buy through an auction. I'm looking at all options now but its a little overwhelming.
I'm also looking for suggestions on areas that are preferably south of Albany and pretty close to the thruway

Re: has anyone purchased land upstate NY recently?
I am originally from the Hudson Valley (only West of the Thruway--NY/NJ/PA border).
I went to undergrad at New Paltz though and love that area.
It's close to the Thruway and not too far from Albany.
A lot of the little towns near Kingston, which is North of New Paltz and a few Thruway exits South of Albany, are nice as well.
I go up to the Kingston area a lot for work, and there seems to be a lot of shopping and restaurants that have built up in the area too, so you have the country but you also have access to things to do.
Not really sure about the land buying thing, but just wanted to offer you ideas of areas to look.
DH and I have ultimate goal to live Upstate and get out of the rat race that is Long Island.

Re: has anyone purchased land upstate NY recently?
Thanks for the reply. My aunt lived in Kingston, actually Hurley for 25 years and now one of her kids live in newbergh and the other in Poughkeepsie. My aunt and uncle live year round now in their summer house in lake copake. I wish we could find acreage closer to Kingston but anything over a few acres is $$$$. DH wants to create his own gun range so we need to be in a very rural area. Plus this is going to be our survival spot if the zombies come ROTFL. I just don't want to drive for two hours when we get off the thruway

Re: has anyone purchased land upstate NY recently?
I understand your challenges.
I am familiar with all those areas as well.
I think more people are moving up there from down here and the city, so the real estate market is not as much of a steal as it once was.
Job market up there can be just as dicey as it is down here too, and often pay is much lower.
Parts of the area near where my family live have a lot of acreage, and are remote, but it's still over 2 hours from Albany.
You might get a bigger response posting this on FHF.
There are a few ppl I believe that relocated up to the Hudson Valley and even directly outside of Albany.

My family has a house in fleischmanns and another closer to Delhi which are close to the town of margaretville, which was hit very hard last year with storms. They're still repairing homes churches markets etc. It's a very nice community and it's about half hour from the Kingston exit. We used a local broker in the area.

Re: has anyone purchased land upstate NY recently?
Hey Kelly - I just came across this post on a search I was doing for something else & thought I might be able to help.
First - have you found anything yet?
I'm born & raised from upstate - Columbia County. It's in between Albany & Poughkeepsie. Rural area & close to the thruway. Just need to cross the Rip Van Winkle. Or, of course there's always the Taconic
I still have my house up there & go up frequently.
How many acres are you looking at buying?

Re: has anyone purchased land upstate NY recently?
We are still looking. We were up there this past weekend. We looked at a property in Gilboa and another in Stamford. We saw a lot of the destruction from Irene in the areas we looked in. There are beautiful farm homes for sale for $50,000 because they have flood damage. We aren't looking for a house though, in fact we'd prefer a very rural area. Minimum of 10 acres.
We are going to spread our search to Columbia County. We visited my Aunt & Uncle in Craryville/Lake Copake on Sunday and we really enjoyed the drive from Albany to there.
I'm starting to find stuff on the MLS, it seems like a lot of the listing are outdated.

We have a house in Copake. Love it up there! So much is for sale in that area now too. DHs family is in Craryville and they have hundreds of acres up there. So beautiful
