Re: where in florida
How about St. Augustine or Clearwater Beach?
ETA: Clearwater might be too much of a "party" place, but I've heard great things about St. Augustine. I think it's more peaceful there.

Re: where in florida
We went to Clearwater Beach in mid-august and it was not a party atmosphere at all. Probably during spring break, or if you stay at Shepards (huge huge party hotel), but the resort we stayed at was VERY family friendly, and the beach itself was family friendly as well.
We visited Winter the dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which my kids, and myself really enjoyed. They had movies at the Pier on the weekend on a big inflatable screen. Great covered playground at the beach. I found it to be super clean, and I'm pretty particular. Lots of mini golf places, alligators, museums, etc. We went to a great museum in Tampa, the Museum of Science and Industry. We traveled down (or up, I dunno lol) the coast to a couple of other beach places (John's Pass, Indian Rocks beach). We wanted to do a boat ride to see dolphins, but a storm was brewing so the water was really choppy and we didn't want to end up sick!
Busch Gardens is near there too in Tampa. It looks fun for kids, but I vowed to have a no theme park, relaxing beach vacation, so we didn't go!
The Tradewinds Resort in St. Pete looks really fun for families! Unfortunately they were booked up during our dates.
