Re: School district
Nassau or Suffolk? North shore or South shore or in the middle? Do you have a lot of money to blow or are you on a budget or in the middle? Diverse or looking for an area to match your culture? A school that has an excellent sports program or ap classes? Dual language program? There are sooooo many factors.

Re: School district
I've heard that Garden City and Merrick are both very highly rated.
I wanted to add though that it depends on what you're looking for. I believe these two are highly rated in terms of graduation rates/going to four year colleges.

I completely agree with this. Other factors would be whether you want a big or small district, whether you want small classes (low student to teacher ratio) or large ones, whether you have a child with special needs, whether you prefer neighborhood elementary schools (geographically zoned) or the princeton plan districts (grouped by grade), whether you care about things like full-day kindergarten and before and after school care. The list goes on and on.
What is a good fit for one person may not work for someone else and their family. "Good" schools is a very subjective concept.
If you have specific criteria and share it, I am sure people will chime in with recommendations and share their experiences, and then you can research those districts further.
Good websites for preliminary info are www.schooldigger.com and www.greatschools.org -- they provide factual info and parents reviews. Newsday rankings can be helpful if you really want to drill into specifics about test scores, gradutation rates, etc.
