Not sure if you've thought of this yet but I had one of those Uh-oh not sure moments last night.

I bought a super cute knitted one-piece outfit to use as a coming home outfit. It is made like a sweater.

I wasn't planning on getting a newborn/0-3 month coat since the baby won't be outside very much.

What are you bringing home the baby in - do we just wrap the baby in a blanket and put in the car? I have a car seat cover (safe kind) that should help trap some of the heat in, but I don't want my baby girl freezing on her first day coming home.

Is it worth it to get some baby bunting or a fleece type overcoat? Will we use this for walks, etc. during the first few months?

What about something like this (Old Navy $20)

Re: Winter Mommies

I got something similar to the ON bunting for DD from Carters. We're reusing it for this baby.

For walks or quick pictures outside in their 1st snow, yes something like that is great. I had a Carters one for DS.

For use in the car, no, I didn't put it on DS, nor will I put it on this baby. There's a few reasons. One, I don't want them to be too overheated. Two, any puffy thickness between the baby and the straps of the car seat will not allow the straps to be adjusted tight enough, even though you may think they are.

As far as the baby being cold in the car seat, the shower cap style covers are great, and you can always put a blanket on TOP of the baby's legs/torso (under the cover) after they are strapped in.

Re: Winter Mommies

I had something like that that was given to me and I think I used it two times. It's not worth buying IMO.

I used it when we took my DD to the city to see the tree and Central Park, and one other time when we went for a walk. Otherwise, the car seat cover is enough to keep them warm. I'd put a blanket in there first when it was really cold and she was sooo warm and cozy.

You cant put them in a carseat with something like that- too thick, so it's really not worth it, IMO.

what size are you getting this in? 0 To 3, or 3 to 6? LO will grow out of the smaller size so fast. Granted we'll have lots of sweaters, fleeced etc, want to get through the winter without outgrowing them all!

I got one of each. That was also during winter 2010 when we kept getting blizzards.

I plan on dressing him/her in a regular little winter outfit (with feeties) and then I have my Kiddopotamus infant car seat cover to keep the baby warm when we leave the hospital. With my DD I use to strap her into the infant seat, tuck a warm blanket around her and then zip up the carseat cover. She was always toasty warm in the cold winter. Chat Icon

DD is due in Jan. I thought about buying one at Carters. If I did, i would probably buy 3-6 months for her as a newborn so there is room to grow and room to have layers on underneath.

I think I will likely just go with the bundleme.

We had one for DS since it was given to us. We never used it bc of the carseat thing as well. When we were leaving the hospital the nurse actually made sure DS had nothing of that sort on while in the carseat.

Winter Mommies

i actually thought of this as soon as i got pregnant, i was waiting to find out what team we were on. I just bought a really cute snow coat from Disney for DD in size 0-3 for her to wear coming home from the hospital and for when we have to go back for her first ped. appointments. i don't plan on walking her out in the winter if its still freezing outside.

Re: Winter Mommies

I'm just going to use a winter type outfit, a blanket over the carseat and the car seat cover (safe one).

I was told NEVER to put a snowsuit or anything puffy/bulky on the baby while in the carseat. And I was also told to be careful about the clothing I do use on the baby while in the carseat, it shouldn't be too big and bulky. Sometimes even the 0-3 months it too big for smaller babies so if need be get something in newborn size that fits better.

I registered for the bundle me....but I've read it shouldn't be used with the car seat. So now not sure what to really use it for. Guess I need to look into car seat covers for the trip home

Any car seat cover that is like a shower cap is good. Ones that only go over the top of the seat and not under the baby as well. The ones that go under the baby may interfere with the proper placement of the straps which could result in a safety issue if ever in an accident.

The bundle me is good for use in a stroller when going for walks. I used it a handful of times, but only had the smaller one. Imo, the bigger one would have been better to get

Re: Winter Mommies

DS1 was a December baby. I used a car seat cover that went over the car seat. That was generally enough to keep him warm. I bought something similar to what you posted, but it was somewhat thin. DS barely wore it because he would sweat so much in it.
