? regarding robberies and home invasions

Where do you think someone has more of a chance of having their house get robbed? On the North Shore or South Shore?

DH and I had this argument. I said the North Shore is a little riskier because you have less exposure to your neighbors. On the south shore, the houses are close together and your neighbors could call 911 if they saw someone breaking in. Some houses on the North Shore are very private and noone would really know if there is something going on.

DH said the South Shore is a bit riskier b/c it's more convenient to robbers because there are more major roads and highways.

I don't think it matters. My sister's boyfriend lives in a gated community in Manhasset and his house was broken into about 4 years ago. My dad lives in Levittown and his house was broken into last year.

I think it depends how close you are to major roads/parkways since that makes for an easy get away

Since LI is about 100 miles long, "North Shore" and "South Shore" covers a massive amount of land and towns.....

I know there is data on this in the community profile info for each town... I believe the crime data is broken down by crimes against property v. violent crime. So I am sure if someone wanted to study this, they could look up the info for every town considered a "north shore" town and every town considered a "south shore" town and work the numbers.

Of course, statistics can always be skewed a bit... if you have one high crime town on one of the shores, that would skew it.

Probably it makes more sense to just look at the data for a specific town you are interested in and compare it to other towns you would potentially be interested in and/or see how it stacks up to other areas.

Personally, I think there's probably not a huge difference if you are generalizing -- north shore v. south -- and I wouldn't really factor it into my decision on where to live/buy a home. But I've never crunched the numbers on it!

My parents live near the water on the south shore, no where near any major highways. Several years ago they had a robber walk into their backdoor and steal my mom's pocketbook off the kitchen table. Their neighbors are all in earshot. I don't really think it matters.

? regarding robberies and home invasions

My inlaws live in queens where the houses are about 6-8 feet apart and their house was broken into in the middle of the day. I honestly don't think it matters, and it wouldn't effect where I buy based on just the NS/SS

Don't think it matters. I was home alone as a teen in north queens and my home was being broke into in the middle of the afternoon but thankfully they realized I was home and took off. Very scary!

I don't think it matters. With the economy the way it is and drug use on the rise, people rob whatever and wherever.

I JUST moved in to a last house on a dead end with a MS field behind me lol. I Just asked my dad to install sensor lights.

I think there are crazies everywhere and you just never know.
