Nervous about 20 week sono
i don't know why I am so nervous. I am also super excited to find out what we are having though.
What do they look for at the 20 week?? Is it external??

Yes, it's external.
They measured the baby's limbs and estimated his/her length, told us the gender, and checked that all the necessary organs were there and looking good. Then they do the blood test (though some people did it prior to the sono) which just entails a finger prick and putting 5 drops of blood onto a piece of paper.
Don't be nervous - be excited it's so much fun to see LO again!
ETA: oops - as Sandra mentions below, there's no blood test ... i got confused between the 12 and 20 week scans sorry!

External and they just go through the whole body and take measurements. We didn't have any blood test along with it (I've actually also never had a finger prick test throughout either of my two pregnancies) so I guess that varies. They look at the brain chambers, the heart, the bones, size of kidneys, stomach, etc.
At our anatomy scan for DD, they found a white spot on her heart which was a scary experience because the sono tech quickly ripped off a few pictures and ran them into the doctor's office and then had us wait to speak to him without telling us why. We had no idea what was going on, and then the doctor told us about the spot. He said it was probably just a calcification or a strong heart muscle, but sent us to a perinatologist the next week to be certain. Turns out it was absolutely nothing (she's an amazing, healthy 20 m/o now who is chasing a pink ball around the living room by my feet as I type) but it was still scary at the time not knowing why everyone was being all hush-hush around us. They tend to shy on the side of caution and having things double-checked by a specialist if anything does come up, and most times it's nothing.
This pregnancy, we saw DS, they confirmed the gender they told us at 12 w, and it was all of a 10 minute sono. We did get some cute pics though.
Have fun and don't worry!!!!

Mine was only external. Don't be nervous and don't be surprised if they ask you to come back because they couldn't see everything.

no actually i think i'm wrong - i blame a combination of mommy brain and it being too early on a monday
the finger prick test thing is at the 12 week scan ...
sorry for the confusion and mis-information.
Sandra - thanks for setting me straight

LOL I still have that feeling every moment of every day and I'm over 35 weeks now! Then, the baby gets here and you're like "what in the world is going on in that little tiny baby head of yours?"
