BTDT mommies feeding question *update at bottom*
I posted this on the parenting board but didn't get any responses so I figured I would try you girls!!
I am exclusively pumping. Baby is 12 days old and is eating 2.5 ounces every 2-3 hours during the day, but will go 5-6 hours through the night. I have to wake him for almost every feeding during the day. He ate 20oz yesterday in 24 hours, but only had 17oz the days before. Is this what he should be eating? Should I be waking him every 3 through the night? Please help!
TIA!

BTDT mommies feeding question
Have you been to the ped yet for his 1 week appointment? What did he weigh at birth, leaving the hospital and at 7 days? Do you go back at 14 days for a follow-up?
It depends on his weight. If he's doing great and thriving, there should be absolutely no need to wake him overnight. DD was losing weight the first week of her life and almost reached failure to thrive so we had to wake her to feed every 3 hours, 24-hours a day. If you're feeding on demand and he's doing great weight-wise, it sounds like everything is perfect! Discuss it with the ped this week, though, just to be sure.
As far as the total amount, I don't remember that well from the very very beginning (I was trying to BF but because of the weight issues and supply was also supplementing through the SNS which was a very difficult process) but it sounds like the right amount. In fact, 2.5 oz at a feeding sounds like a lot for that age! But babies are smart and if you overfeed them will often spit-up what they don't want. I think between 16 and 24 oz a day by 2 weeks is common.

Re: BTDT mommies feeding question
I pumped with my son, I remember he ate alot, and he was always up every 3 hours on his own...
I was googling now before dd comes- and drs recommended not letting them go longer than 4hrs - in the first two weeks.

Re: BTDT mommies feeding question
My ped did not want us letting our DD go more than 3 hrs between fedings in the first few weeks. He wanted us to wake her and make sure she ate. As she got older it didn't matter and by 8 wks she was STTN for 10-12hrs.

BTDT mommies feeding question
unless he is underweight def don't wake him!!! feed as much as he will eat. he will spit up if its too much and then you will know. if he cries when he finishes a bottle you can give more because he might be still hungry. you will gradually have to increase his feeds so it sounds like you are doing everything right

BTDT mommies feeding question
He weighed 7lbs at birth and 6lbs 11oz leaving the hospital. At 1 week he was back to 7 lbs. We are going back to the ped on Wednesday. He seems satisfied after a bottle, he doesn't spit up or cry for more.
When I was breast feeding him the ped said wake him every 2-3 hours around the clock. When I went back I saw a different ped in the practice and told him I was pumping and at that time he was drinking 2oz. He said let him sleep at night and don't let him go more han 4 hours during the day. I'm just afraid his ped (the one that said 2-3 hours around e clock) won't agree!

Those are GREAT weights. DD was born at 7 2, was 6 9 when we left and 6 4 at a week. So we had a PROBLEM and she was starving. Your son is doing GREAT and you're doing great!!! I think following your instinct and the advice of the other ped is perfect for now, and you'll deal with the other ped when you see him again.
The baby will let you know if he wants more or more often. These kids are smart and don't starve themselves! (Our problem had to do with EBF and no milk after 2 weeks still.)
Keep up the great work mamma!!

Re: BTDT mommies feeding question
The hospital told me to wake the baby at night... I laughed at them... Once dd started sleeping 4-5 hrs straight at night, I was praising the lord, not waking my baby!
There will be some days baby eats more/less than others and that's ok. We do the same thing as adults right? As long as it isn't a significant decrease, I wouldnt worry. Enjoy the extra hours of sleep

Re: BTDT mommies feeding question
If you go too long without pumping your supply WILL decrease! It happened to me. Pump every 2 to 3 hours in the beginning and as they get older 3-4 hours. ROUND THE CLOCK! lol

BTDT mommies feeding question
I exclusively BF my son until he was 20 months. Your body knows EXACTLY the amount your baby needs in order to thrive... it is supply and demand...your body adjusts to the baby's feeding schedule. For example: if his last feeding is at 11pm and he sleeps until 4am your body will adjust to those feeding times...you WILL NOT lose your supply you will just have to re-train your body if need be...but I wouldnt worry that much about waking him NOR would I wake up myself to pump...
Make sure you drink 8oz. of water BEFORE, DURING and AFTER each feeding (or pumping session) it decreases gas in the baby and keeps you hydrated for your supply. Try to have 16 almonds/walnuts a day to increase Omega 3 for fatty hind milk...breastfed babies "typically" do not overeat...I would not worry one bit...so as long as he is gaining you are fine!
Keep up the nursing...its difficult, exhausting and a pain at times (puming) but once you get a routine and get in the groove its the best thing you will have done :)

Re: BTDT mommies feeding question
I FF both of my boys - so that migh make a difference, but why would you wake the baby sleeping in the middle of the night to feed him?
If he's hungry, wouldn't he wake up on his own?

most likely they wouldnt...only bc they dont know "hunger" and BF babies tend to eat smaller amounts more frequently this early in the game due to the fact that they arent efficient feeders yet...
IME, you cannot compare FF and BF amounts...with BM it is the quality of the milk not the quantity they drink...hind milk that is very fatty (yellow) will fill up a 12 day old in 2oz. where as a 12 day old FF baby may drink 4oz.

BTDT mommies feeding question
I pump every 2-3 hours through the day but I pump on the baby's schedule through the niht. If he sleeps 5 hours then that's how long I go without pumping. I just can't wake up and pump if he's sleeping!
The ped wanted me to wake him through the night until he started gaining weight.

Re: BTDT mommies feeding question
Is baby gaining weight? Is baby peeing and pooping a lot? That is how you know if your baby is getting enough milk.
If he/she is and gaining well, then DON'T wake your baby at night. Enjoy the longer stretch and keep up the good work, mommy!

Seems like his weight is fine. As long as he keeps gaining and peeing/pooping, you're doing fine. Since you're only pumping though, make sure you dont skip sessions. You get more from actually nursing, so I don't know if your supply will drop since you're only pumping. I pumped and nursed so much in the beginning to build up a good supply and I have never had supply issues since. I think it's because I nursed/pumped sooooo much (like every 2-3 hours day and night) in the beginning. Just keep pumping, but during the night, if he is sleeping, SLEEP :) Dont wake him.
Kellymom.com is a great resource for BFing.

BTDT mommies feeding question
Just an update. dS weighs 7lbs 9oz! He is 15 days old and gained 9oz in 8 days! Ped said I could let him sleep at night as long as he eats well through the day! He slept from 11pm until 430am last night. I pray he keeps it up! Thanks for all your advice!
