Cold Cuts

Girls I've heard that cold cuts are a no no to eat while pregnant. But what exactly is classified as a cold cut? is classic chicken breast and turkey considered cold cuts?

Re: Cold Cuts

You want to avoid it if it's sliced on a deli slicer.

Cold Cuts

Commercially packaged pre-cooked cold cuts are fine. It's cold cuts from a deli counter (and cheese sliced on the same slicers) that are suspect because of potential lysteria contamination. If you trust your deli as extremely clean with a high-turnover, you can use your judgment whether you want to eat them or not. Heating the meat to steaming can kill bacteria and make it safe again. It's a comfort-level thing.

ITA... Also, have them toss the first slice. That helps too.

I eat them sometimes, my doctor said just heat them up quick in the microwave to kill any "possible" bacteria.

Cold Cuts

I ate them my entire pregnancy and I'm still here and DS is just fine. My OB said cold cuts is the new fad of not to eat items but like anything it is fine in moderation.

And no I did not heat them.

Re: Cold Cuts

I eat them all the time. I go to a busy place where I amended to wait in a line 10 people deep and they are often opening up a new package since it goes so quick (I go to stop n shop). I still microwave them to be safe.

I have had them a few times during pregnancy and do not heat them. My dr said everything in moderation.

Me too! I'm not a fan of meat, but I'll eat deli ham. At least it's protein. But I'm paranoid and heat them. (although I used to say I never would)

Re: Cold Cuts

I eat Boars Head ham and turkey weekly.

My OB said it was ok as long as it's Boars Head and from a clean reputable place.

I ate them with my first pregnancy as well.

I do understand the risks and if my OB said no to it, I wouldn't do it. Follow the advice of your OB and do what you feel is best.

ehh, i also eat sushi on the reg too Chat Icon to each his own. i won't judge anyone who stays away from them but, in all honesty and probability - chicken is more dangerous than cold cuts or sushi.

its also my second pregnancy so maybe the fear factor has worn Chat Icon

I was REALLY good with my DD about not eating cold cuts even though I LOVE sandwiches but with this pregnancy I've had a ham and cheese sandwich a few times. I make sure to buy it from somewhere that has A LOT of deli activity so that I know for sure the meats are turning over fast. I get such cravings for a sandwich sometimes I just give in. My DR said no, and I'd much rather not have them heated up so I'm just going to abstain.

Cold Cuts

It's on the list of foods to avoid for a reason and I'd rather be safe than sorry, so I don't eat them.

Also, ive read and confirmed with my dr. that the concern is that cold cuts can become contaminated with listeria prior to packaging for sale to delis, so it really has nothing to do with the slicer.

same. At them throughout all 3 of my pregnancies and never had an issue. I would only buy Boars Head, mainly because of taste.

I never heated them, the thought of it skeeves me. I actually made my sandwich in the morning and took it to work with me and ate it several hours later.

You have to do what your comfortable with.
