RH - antibodies screen

I've known that I am RH- my entire pregnancy, I also knew that I would have to have the Rhogam shot at 28 weeks and than again when my child was born, but I did not know I had to have this type of blood test. I am extremely freaked out and hoping someone else has had it and would be willing to share what their outcome was. I am negative and my DH is positive. I read the possible mixing of the blood with my child could cause a danger etc. My pregnancy thus far has been healthy. I had some issues in the very beginning but I would think they would be unrelated to this... can someone please share some feedback.

i posted this in another thread. as long as you have not been sensitized (already creating antibodies) there should be no issues. likely you will have rhogam at 28 weeks and after delivery.

go on babycenter.com and search for the ISO (isoimmunization group) Chat Icon TONS of info there, the most information I have ever been able to find on Rh and allele isoimmunization.

They will likely titer your blood to see if you are creating antibodies. That is the first step (likely, you are not). Chat Icon

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for the response. It just really took me back that they are doing a blood test. I wasn't expecting it at all. How would I even know if I made antibodies, why would I? It's so nerve wracking, I was just really starting to get excited... I feel like I got the wind knocked out of me. I will check over at babycenter.com too. Thank you for the info. =).

is this your first pregnancy? sometimes, if it is your second pregnancy, you can be sensitized from the first pregnancy which just means some of your babies blood mixed with yours so in response to babies + blood, you created antibodies. Those antibodies would show up on a titer (a blood test that counts the antibodies in your blood). Rhogam is used to prevent sensitization and creation of antibodies.

I do not have a Rh issue but something similar. My husband has a blood antigen called E. I am negative for E. When I had my csection with my son, they did my pre-op blood work and found antibodies in my blood to E. My son must also be E+. So, since I am E- and baby is E+, I started creating antibodies towards baby's blood. It ususally isnt dangerous during a first pregnancy but is during a 2nd, 3rd etc. I have titers and sonos weekly now to watch my antibody levels etc etc etc - very dangerous.

Likely (especially if this is your first pregnancy) you do not have antibodies and the Rhogam will prevent your body from making antibodies if your blood does come in contact with LOs. Do not worry, Rh is the most common issoimmunzation issue and there is Rhogam! For me, there is no injection which in most cases pevents sensitization Chat Icon
