pituitary gland and NO sperm?

Crashing for my sister. Her and her DH have been trying for a year and a half with no luck. They recently went to a specialist and her DH gave 2 samples- both had not a single sperm. They need to go back for more testing but the doctor mentioned it could be his pituitary gland and they could try medicine to regulate it. I googled for her and found some natural remidies he could try. I told her if anything, maybe it will help along with the medication. Has anyone else been through this? Did you have success either with medical or natural treatment? I see how much it hurts my sister that they have not been able to conceive so I want to help as much as I can. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Also, they just moved to the DC area and need to find a new specialist. If anyone knows of any in that area or northern VA I would love to send her a recommendation. TIA Chat Icon

Re: pituitary gland and NO sperm?

There are a few girls on the site who have dealt with this. My biggest piece of advice is to find a urologist who specializes in male infertility.

There are many causes of no sperm and the pituitary gland is only one reasons. Others include, genetics, low testosterone, a blockage, other meds he's on, etc. Only a specialist can run the tests to know.

There's a chance he produces sperm but it's just not coming out. In that case they can do a biopsy and then do IVF.

As for the natural remedies - it really depends on the cause. But most likely he will need medication or surgery, if it's correctable at all. Vitamins MAY help low counts but won't initiate production from 0.

I hope they find the answers they're looking for.

Re: pituitary gland and NO sperm?

Thanks so much for the advice. The did an ultrasound which I guess rules out any blockage. They are definitely looking for a doctor that specializes in male infertility. I keep trying to get her to come on here so that she can connect with others who share their struggle. Thanks again :)

Crashing to respond. My sister's DH had an issue with lack of sperm and it turned out to be a blockage. They now have 2 healthy children. You said your sis is in the DC area - mine is in the baltimore area. If you would like the name of their specialist please send me an FM (i don't come on this board frequently). Chat Icon

Re: pituitary gland and NO sperm?

I just read your post and sounds like my sitution 10 months ago. My husband and i started trying naturally for a few months and then decided to go get checked out to make sure we were both ok...only to find out that he had no sperm...Since then he's been on medications and the results have increased but we are still not ready for IVF(IUI is out of the question for us). Having a sister of my own there are a few things that would be nice for you to understand/do. Don't be too overwhelming and constantly ask for updates. This is a LONG process and there ususally isn't any updates after starting medications for 4-6 weeks at a time. This could last 6+ months alone. Be understanding that her mood may not always be 'happy and cheerful'. This is a heart breaking process. i never thought this would be me, and now that i'm in it, the word hard doesnt' do it justice.
I've heard people say this is a test of your marriage and i can't agree more. This is something that her and her husband need to do together. Trust me, it only makes the relationship stronger or absoultely fall apart(i've seen both with friends of mine). There will be 100's of decisions to make along the way and her and her husband will need to make those calls.
Be a good listener - even if you don't offer advice b/c it's hard too if you haven't gone through it, just listen and give lots of hugs Chat Icon even if you are miles away this still can be done through skype Chat Icon
Most importantly, whatever decisions they choose to make, don't question them....i'm sure they will think about things enough and the last thing you want is someone you love questioning your decisions.
I'm sorry if this was long but seeing as I'm going through this now and 100% in the moment, i know how this can break someone down...it has happened to me multiple times through this journey...but i need to keep my eye on the prize no matter how long it takes - a baby!
PS...i think it's really sweet of you to come on here just for your sister...i'm sure that means a lot to her!
