Spinoff: If you've decided NOT to do cord blood banking, what are your reasons?
What are reasons/things you've uncovered in research that made you decide NOT to do cord blood banking?

Spinoff: If you've decided NOT to do cord blood banking, what are your reasons?
We were planning on banking until recently. We still haven't decided 100% yet but now we're leaning more towards not banking. We asked my OB his opinion and he said we'd probably be better off saving the money for her college or something like that. He has 7 kids of his own and DH asked him if he was having an eighth would he bank the cord blood, and he said no. Then after some reading DH and i decided we really wanted to donate the cord blood. The American Pediatric Association recommends donating rather than banking, but it turns out the hospital I'm delivering in doesn't accept donations. :(

Re: Spinoff: If you've decided NOT to do cord blood banking, what are your reasons?
We haven't made a final decision, but my cons are...
- it's obviously expensive - there are no definitive statistics, but overall, there's a low likelihood of actually needing the cord blood - the cord blood might not be sufficient to provide a cure - it hasn't been proven how long the blood would be "good" for - it's possible the genes that caused the disease are already in the cord blood - even if g-d forbid your child has one of these diseases, cord blood is likely not the only available treatment. Other treatment options would probably be available.
The diseases that cord blood can treat are relatively rare. That being said, if they run in either of your families, I'd probably consider it more heavily than if you have healthy family histories.

I don't feel the science is advanced enough to justify the expense.
There is a low liklihood of actually needing it and there is no proof that the blood will still be good when you actually do need it - I believe right now, they can safely store it for 15 years or so.
For us, the money will be better spent towards college and savings towards getting into a better house/neighborhood for school district.
I will look into donating it, I'd like to support further research. Hopefully this will be something routine and inexpensive for future generations.

I will donate if my hospital will let me. My sister banked hers because my cousin has a disease and they use the cord blood to try to find a cure. My aunt asked her to and paid for it. If my aunt asks me and offers to pay for it, I will certainly do the same. I think it is too expensive and like the previous poster said, the science does not justify it.

Cost.
I also have a friend with a sick child and the cord blood cannot help.
I think there are few times that it actually might help that the cost is too high to justify. Yes I know what if it could help but I can't live my life for what ifs.
