WWYD - scheduling c-section

My due date is on a Monday (10/15). I am having a scheduled c-section since I had one (non-scheduled) with my DD.

Turns out, my doctor will be away on vacation the entire week before my due date - which is when we would normally schedule (anytime after 39 weeks).

So, my dilemma is, do I schedule my c-section with another doctor on Fri (10/12) or wait till Mon (10/15) - my due date?

I'm inclined just to wait till Mon, because I really love my doctor - but, the convenience of having it on Friday is also very intriguing being I have a 5 y/o DD (she could go to school on Friday and come after school, be with us Sat & Sun, and then return to school on Mon).

WWYD? Are the other factors here that I'm not thinking of?? TIA! Chat Icon

Really depends on what is more important to you. It is either the convenience factor, of it being on a friday and having your DD with you or the safety factor of having the operation with a doctor you trust and know. To me, it was important for me to have my doctor- so I made sure it was scheduled with her and prayed that my DD didn't arrive early and mess up the plan!

Not an expert but in my experience, it stinks to be in the hospital on weekends because they don't have all the doctors/specialists working then. We've always had to wait out the weekend to see a doc on Monday. No idea if that's the same case in obgyn.

Any of the doctors in his practice - but I'd know which one I was scheduling with. I can also set up a bunch of appts with this particular doctor if I want.

I would personally prefer to have mmy own doctor perform the surgery if possible. PP made a good point about being in the hospital over a weekend; but babies are born every day so don't think have to have necessary staff on hand to deal with patients needs all the time?

Re: WWYD - scheduling c-section

I had my c-section on a saturday tho and i agree with the fact that it is different on the weekends. all the staff kept saying things like "well its the weekend". Staff was much slower, food delivery was slower, there were supposed to be flowers in the room but someone forgot mine, cleaning of the rooms were slower so i was stuck in recovery for much longer than i needed to be, and we did have to wait until monday for some of the specialists to see us. So that is another reason monday with your own doctor might be better.

I had the exact same issue , even posted here, and I also have a 5yo who will be going to school. I decided to go woth another dr - I had met/ seen this dr few times also and knew she is excellent - and do it Fri morning, this way I'll be home on Mon or Tue. Mostly because I know I will not get to my due date and I feel more comfortable being scheduled with someone I know rather than any dr on call. I know there is a chance of this happening any time but still...
I did think about the whole weekend situation but I know few people who delivered on the weekend at NSUH in Manhasset (that's where I will be delivering) and they said they had no issues bc it was a weekend.

I would go with your due date and the doctor that you love... usually you have to stay at the hospital for 4 days anyway with a c-section so by friday you will be home and your dd will be home from school on the weekend to spend with you guys and the new baby ... maybe it would be better that she is going to school during the day while your in the hospital ... it will give you a lil break to bond with the new baby!

Re: WWYD - scheduling c-section

You could go into labor before your csection. No one tells babies about these dates.

IMO I'd schedule it for 10/15 so you're with a doctor you trust and hope for the best.

Thanks for your input, everyone! Chat Icon

So, I had all but decided on waiting till Monday (w/ my doctor), and then my DH pointed out that if we do it on Friday, he'll get more time at home w/ the baby. He gets 2 weeks paternity, so if we do the c-section on Monday, that's when it'd start, but if we do it on Friday, it starts then and obviously Sat & Sun don't count ... so, I'm thinking that might be a game-changer.

(and yes, I am obviously aware I can go into labor on my own at anytime!)
