just spoke with HR and i'm not currently enrolled in Short Term Disability which means that until i enroll, i won't get paid for any of my maternity leave.

I thought I was already enrolled by default but apparently not Chat Icon

There's an open enrollment period in October but since I'm due in Oct, we're not entirely sure how it'll work out (the HR person that usually deals with this stuff is out so I still need to wait and find out what's going on)

so my PSA is to make sure you enroll in Short Term Disability asap, if you haven't already done so!

I believe you need to be enrolled in STD (Short Term Dis.) for a year before you can collect from it. However, things may have changed since ALL the healthcare laws are different then they were several years ago when I worked. Im dont think if you enroll in October you will be elligable for this year :(

well, the HR person said she *thinks* that if i enroll in October's open-enrollment period, it'll be effective in November. But again, she's the main HR person who usually does this so she will find out for me. I seriously hope you are both wrong or i need to start penny-pinching asap!

I'm in HR....Most companies will not cover you immediately after you enroll, there's usually a waiting period like 6 or 12 months. That really sucks! Also keep in mind that even if you will get covered most have a 60 day (30 for the lucky few or those like me that pay an extra $ into it) waiting period before you can collect payments. So that means if you have a reg delivery you get 6 weeks and CS 8 weeks and won't qualify for payments. But every policy is different so i'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!!

My std kicked in as soon as I started my job. And no 30 or 60 waiting period. Each plan is different. Just depends on your company

I work in HR and it has been different at every company I have worked at. The last place I worked at didn't have any waiting period but open enrollment was in November and benefits didn't kick in until 1/1. I have worked at places that have waiting periods and places that didn't. It depends on the company's individual plan. Good Luck I hope you don't have any waiting period and they can get you in for November!

Thanks everyone ... unfortunately, i had no luck.

HR came back saying that pregnancy is a "preexisting condition" so although I'll be able to apply, i won't be able to use the benefits for this pregnancy.

And the company doesn't auto-enroll you for STD benefits because it's an additional out-of-pocket fee ... honestly - i would've preferred they automatically deduct that $5 per month rather than have to deal with this now Chat Icon

Hopefully somebody here can learn from my stupidity
