Question about receptive language..
Hi all!
I hope nobody minds I post here. I came across this site after a search on early intervention and receptive language. I'm not from or living on Long Island, so I hope. I'm not breaking a rule here...... For some background: my son is 17 months but was born prematurely so he's almost 15 months corrected. He's done quite well I think. He's walking and has started saying some words. He claps and waves and does "so big" games and can point. He's also had good receptive skills. He knows several body parts and can do a few commands. What has me worried is that for the past couple of days he's been less apt to follow a command or body part. When I ask he'll ignore me or smile at me. He's still doing some of the things I ask like "go to your room" or. "get the ball" but he's not doing others that he always has done. Is this normal? Could he be ignoring me? It's only been a couple days so maybe I'm just a neurotic

Re: Question about receptive language..
Honestly I think he's just playing with you. He's getting older and more distracted. I hav two boys. My first is 3 and he has receptive and expressive delays. He's making huge progress. He just always had delays. Not like it just happened one day. My 13 month old knows and seems to understand everything. Just some days he ignores me and gives me that evil smile. Either that or I ask him to do a cute trick he knows and he makes a liar out of me when someone else is around. They are learning and unrstanding more each day. They figure out that hey... I don't have to do evything mommy says Just keep doing what you're doing and if it gets worse than be concerned and speak with your Ped. Oh, and no breaking rules. I'm in nj. This is for all parents from anywhere with questions. Ask anytime.

Thank you, Erica! Sorry it took so long for me to reply. My son makes a liar out of me too sometimes. I feel like once he started walking he's become more easily distracted. He likes walking all over and exploring everything and I think he gets annoyed when I ask him questions or tell him what to do. He's becoming a very independent guy right before my eyes!

Sometimes they have one track minds, I know mine does!! If he is mastering a new skill the old ones take a back seat for a bit. I wouldn't worry too much right now, but if it becomes more consistent talk to your Dr to maybe put your mind at ease a bit!!

Sounds normal to me. My DS is 14 actual, 13 adjusted and if he's engrossed in something he'll ignore me too. At this age they are learning so much new stuff and taking everything in-- i bet he knows exactly what you're asking; he's just busy or thinks its more fun to ignore mom!
