Re: very talkative and inquisitive 2.5yo ... help me
so funny. i get annoyed with this, and usually start asking him questions. when i get "who's house is this?" as we're driving - passed every house - i take a deep breath, and start inventing names, and then ask him who do YOU think lives there. ugh, takes patience.
so usually, when i get tired of it, i turn it around and ask him to think about things...and to take his time. sometimes i'll do the same so he can follow along like, hmmm - let me think about that one.
he's 2 going on 5, and i can imagine the inquiries becoming more complex the older he gets

LOL! We are in the same boat. DD is almost 2 and talks A LOT and ask a lot of questions and is quite observant. I usually indulge her because I like that she has such a keen sense of curiousity, but when it gets to be too much I tell her to just stop and think about it and maybe she can tell me instead. That usually leads to her telling me some made up story.

Re: very talkative and inquisitive 2.5yo ... help me
Prepare yourself- the onslaught of questions will continue and get more complex as they get older!
My son is 4.5 and has been peppering us with questions since he turned 2! Yesterday he asked me "Where do people go when they die"?
It helps that he has a little brother, who is 2. As much as he enjoys asking questions, he also LOVES to tell people how much he knows! That gives me a break because when they are together, they gab non-stop.
At the age of 2, their attention span is pretty short and their minds are racing, so you can easily re-direct by asking him questions right back. Or, head him off by narrating what you are doing, I do that a lot ("So, now I need to go to Trader Joe's since I pick up food for dinner, we will pass the library on our way," etc etc)

Re: very talkative and inquisitive 2.5yo ... help me
I have two that both talked early so this has been going on a long time. In some senses it is easier with my DD because my DS (4.5) will answer many of her questions and they dialogue between the two of them! I also find the more we all just "talk" the less constant questions there are!
The one problem I am having with regard to this with my second I'm not sure how to handle because my DS was very shy at this age and really only talked to people he knew well My DD does the constant questions to EVERYONE - kids, adults, strangers and sometimes I get embarrassed but, she is not old enough to get when she needs to be quiet. A frequent problem we have is that she always tries to talk to other kids her age - hi, im xyz - what is your name, how old are you? The thing is, not all kids at 2 are talkative It gets her annoyed and then she starts talking to their parents THe other day at the park I was distracted with my son and his friend and saw her playing with a boy and talking to his mom. The mom told me she said "how old is he why isn't he talking???" The mom said he is your age and he just doesn't talk much yet and the mom said she said "he's not my age - he doesn't talk - he is a BABY" - I felt SO BAD and I didn't know what to say! I told my DD not to say things like that but she doesn't get that it isn't nice sometimes!

Mine was (and still is) the same way -
I tried to turn it around w/ "I don't know, what/where/when do you think" .....
backfired with "Mommy, If I KNEW, I wouldn't be ASKING you" ......
Ah, we want them to be so smart - and then when they are you want to

very talkative and inquisitive 2.5yo ... help me
It never stops. I LOVE it! Its a game to get back answers she can't ask questions for or to catch her asking the same question twice like "OoooooH!" and she'll laugh. If she says "why" more than once I say "why what?" and we go that way if she still sticks with why I ask "why do you ask why so much?" and she laughs. I riddle her with questions too so I figure its fair.
How as your day what did you learn who did you see what did you do were you outside today did you listen to the teacher (why not) what did you eat Did you like it Why what did you see in circle time what song did you sing can you show me the letter you worked on whats your favorite letter who was your friend today why? what did Ms. Jennifer do with you (the asst) why?
hahaha
Seems fair to me.

Re: very talkative and inquisitive 2.5yo ... help me
My DS is like this. He's 34 months and it's questions all day long. All day. He does not stop talking. I just go along with it and answer as best I can. If it's the same question that I've already answered, I tell him that I already answered that. When it gets to be too much I start doing stuff around the house while he plays by himself. This way I get a break. DS i very bright and I know this is part of it so I just go along with it. Won't last forever although it will last for quite a while longer.
I was the same exact way. It was so bad and so many questions that my mom asked the ped about it Ped just said that I was obviously very bright and that she just had to deal.

You know it is a very good thing for kids to ask questions! I'm a speech pathologist and i always tell the parents that your goal is for the kids to be talking, retelling/recounting stories/events, and asking questions all the time. I know it can make you insane b/c I have a 2 year old that does the same thing! When you get to that point, switch it up...
put him on a hunt for letters in signs, shapes in the environment, colors of things around him, etc.
Start singing a song and have him do the hand gestures.
see how much of a routine or story he can retell, even if you give him sentence starters to lead him in.
have him name things in a category, like things you see at the park, animals on the farm, etc.

This is great! Thank you!
I actually tried this in the car today actually, look for letters and signs, he did it for a good while, then he turned it back on me "what letters do you see, mommy?" .... I'll take a good while, though!

I coped by answering every question I could or asking the question "I don't know, where do you think they're going?" & go from there.
Have you seen Louis CK's act on Why? It's hysterical. Here's the link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u2ZsoYWwJA
The whole act is great (although if you're offended by language, he's not for you). the part about why starts at 6:20

Re: very talkative and inquisitive 2.5yo ... help me
LOL I guess I don't mind as DD#2 (turned 3 in May) usually asks some fun questions. I get the fun ones like how does air conditioning work, why do birds fly but not all other animals, my mom took her to the Metropolitan museum while DD#1 and I were at Mary Poppins yesterday - she said that she sat in front of the sculptures for like 5 mins each and asked 1000 and 1 questions (why is he in that position, how did they sculpt things that way, how long did it take for him to create that etc.)
Honestly sometimes I wish they were easy questions - that I could at least answer...LOL. Nothing like why did god make the sky blue instead of another color. Oh and if you say uh huh to her she says stop saying that mother (YES she calls me mother when she gets serious) and answer my question. If you give her a short answer she says NO that is not the answer.

ITA!!! I think it's adorable. They are sponges at this age, thirsting for information. Why not answer their every burning question?! And Veronica brings up a good point- we assault them with questions all day long too!
