We're getting ready to transition to a booster seat but there are so many varieties. What do you recommend?

Just my opinion but I would stay in a harness car seat, My DS is 6 years old and in a high back booster seat but I still feel like he is too tiny and does not know how to sit properly with a seat belt, he fools around with it, tries to move it when he's uncomfortable, hangs himself to the side, you know typical bored in the car stuff. I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

I also believe the NYS requirement is above 40lbs.

I agree. If you absolutely must switch to a booster get a high backed booster

here is a list from the National Institute of Highway safety

IMO too little for a booster. I think they need to be over 40lbs anyway. I would go for the Britax Regent or Graco Nautilus. 5 point booster seats. The Nautilus can convert to a backless booster and goes up to 100lbs.

Oh yes, I know DC is still too small. I wanted to start researching and decide on which to get so once there is a good deal we could purchase it. I assume within the next 3-4 months she may be ready.

I wouldn't rush it. 4 is the gov't absolute minimum for a booster. I'm not going to trust DC's safety on the government's minimum... DS was 6 when we switched him out of his 5 point harness, and DD is over 6, and we aren't planning on switching her for a while yet. The 5 point harness is safer than a booster, so we're keeping them in the 5-point seat as long as possible. (pretty much until either the height or weight limit of the seat).
