talk to me about pre-school
My son is in daycare full time M-F 8-545. We LOVE our daycare and our son is learning so much.
Last week, one of the three year olds had his last day because he is beginning pre-school.
How does preschool work? It is full time? Is it only a few days per week, a few hours per day (which is what I thought it was)?
How much does pre-school typically cost?
For moms who work FT - how do you do it? How do you send your child to pre-school if it is only part time? How do you handle the drop off and pick up and what about the other hours that your child needs care?
Are there moms who forego preschool and just keep their children in fulltime daycare? Would my son be missing out?
Thanks

Re: talk to me about pre-school
I am starting DD in a 2 yr old toddler program in September. It is a school and not a day care.(Not that I am aware that there is a huge difference at this age). She is in a full day class twice a week from 9-2. They do offer before and after care which I will be using as a FTWM.
They also offer the program everyday but I think DD is too young for a full week.

Re: talk to me about pre-school
DS is going to preschool starting next month (He'll be 4 on the 13th.) We started him in the 3 year old room (kind of more like nursey school) and it's called the "undergraduate" program. This year he'll be in the same school but in the "graduate" program. The program is open 5 days per week, 7am-5:30pm. I drop DS off at 8:30 and I get him at 4:30. Technically, the preschool program is over for the day at 3 but DS has to stay because I'm working. So, he has free play with the other kids that also stay (most of the class) and they wait for pick up. He's there 5 days per week. Some kids only go part time a few days per week.
We pay $800 for the month.

wow, so maybe this is a better option for us once DS is 4 and as long as its available in our area. Would save us considerable money per month. I didn't even think that they would have an option for early drop off or late pick up!
thanks for the info

Re: talk to me about pre-school
Its really up to you. I own a preschool and many children come 5 days a week if they are turning 4. This better prepares them for district. However, it also depends on your child. Go with your gut! Interview and make a decision that best fits your family. The average cost is 300 a month for half days. Good Luck!

thank you!
Since my original post, i've done a good amount of research. It seems my son wouldn't really gain anything until the 4 year old program so we still have some time. His daycare has an excellent program, very comperable to or more aggresive than most 3 year old programs I've seen so I guess we just sit tight until next year when he is 3 and we are looking to register for a 4 year old program
