Sod w/out a sprinkler system?
Anyone have success with sod and no sprinkler system? We really need sod but have been told it does best w/ a sprinkler system. We are really close to the beach and have the most horrid sandy "soil". I am trying to avoid the added expense since once the sod takes, normal watering seems to suffice. Any thoughts? TIA

If you have a hose and sprinkler you should be fine. It needs a good soaking 2x a day. With a sprinkler I would run it an hour each time.

If your going to put sod down I would def recommend a sprinkler...my friend put sod down and he did not water it enough and it died...if you going to go thru the expense of sod might as well ensure that it will be watered enough

As long as you can use a manual sprinkler and water it at least twice a day, it should be fine. My DH had to put new sod down after we had our patio re-done and our in-ground sprinkler lines got messed up so they weren't working and we used a manual sprinkler until the lines were fixed.

Re: Sod w/out a sprinkler system?
We just sodded the backyard without a sprinkler system. I have to admit, it was the most annoying thing ever! I had to rotate the sprinkler to soak each portion for 30 minutes 2x a day. It is definitely doable bc ours hasn't died yet lol

Tx everyone! We'll see if we can swing both both glad to know it's doable (but a PITA) if we can't!

I would recommend the sprinkler system. It is such a PITA to not have it with sod. We just put sod in this year as well and got sprinklers too. Sprinklers cost us about $1800 I think for 7 zones.

if you're going to skip one, you might do better skipping the sod.
Last year we moved into our new to us house, we did construction on it, demoed a front porch and had a mess of a front yard with sand etc.
we had some top soil dumped, we tilled in some peat moss, then did grass seed, followed by more peat moss. then watered twice a day with regular sprinklers. it was work, a pain in the ass, but the lawn came up great. that was in the fall, doing this work in late sept/early october.
maybe get someone to seed and do sprinklers?
