nanny vs daycare
what do you ladies plan on doing with your LO if you will be returning to work?
I always assume daycare, but looking into the ones in my area i am being told they only offer 8-6 (i work 9-5 in the bronx so its cutting it veryyy close)...and that its $1400 per month. I called a few others and they are 1600 per month but have better hours (not as conveniently located) so now im debating on a nanny
just wondering if anyone has any idea on the cost of a nanny (not live in) and also can anyone share pros/cons of nanny or daycare

we'll be using a nanny for the first year. we were able to get a good reference and the thought of dealing with all the day care waiting lists overwhelmed me! not to mention we're moving in october, so wouldn't even know what area of the city to look for day care.
as for nanny prices, we've found it to be roughly $600 - 700 a week. you also have to cover 2 weeks of paid vacation. not sure how sick days/bonuses factor in - haven't gotten that far!
ETA: this is the quote for manhattan. might be less expensive elsewhere.

nanny vs daycare
When my DD was 3 months old i returned to work and got a in home (mine) nanny. I paid her $10 hour and she typically worked 9-5 but i would let her leave early or sometimes she stayed late. So it actually works out to be 1600 a month. I put her in daycare when she was 9 months old and i wish i had done it sooner. Our nanny was great and very loving (perfect for a infant) but when your baby stars to crawl and interact its nice to have them in a daycare setting. I love daycare. Its so structured (at least ours is). They serve breakfast/lunch (something you would have to provide nanny) and they have fun at daycare! They have outside time and indoor activities. And also- when baby is in daycare it gives them an option to get out of the house and also keeps your house clean while at work :)
Only downside of daycare- they get sick all the time in the winter. But like my doctor said- she is going to happen now or when she hits kindergarten!

that is BIG bucks!!! 2400-2800 per month! Even daycare at the high end on LI is only 1500-1600 per month.

yeah, i know. huge downside to living in the city. i never expected to be paying over 30k for a nanny, but to be honest, daycare here isn't that much less. the rates i've been getting for that are between 20-24k.

Check around at the day cares. Mine on LI normal hrs are 8-6 but have early drop off starting at 630 and late pick up until 630.
I drop my DS off at 730 and I arranged with my boss to leave an hr early 2 days to pick him up at 530.
Nanny would have been the same price give or take a few $$

nanny vs daycare
we are using a daycare... Infant rate is like $1,400 a month - open 7 to 630 ... Its a personal decision what you like, to us we wanted more than just one person, so they wouldn't feel like a parent to our kid.

DS has had a nanny since he was 3 mos (he is now 2 1/2). Our nanny works from 8-6 M-F and we pay her $700 per week on the books which equates to $14/hr. She gets 2 weeks paid vacation (one week must be coordinated with ours), a metrocard (I live and work in NYC), and we are happy to provide food for her, although she prefers to bring her food from home. She is primarily responsible for caring for, cooking for and cleaning up after DS as well as DS laundry 2x per week. However, she also tends to keep the house exceptionally clean, do all of the dishes and typically cooks for DH and I 2-3x per week.
Yes, it is more expensive than daycare, but it works for our lifestyle. She is not just a nanny, she really is part of the family.

Depends on where you are located , but I would always choose a nanny over a daycare THE first year.
Then I think daycare is better...
But again it depends where you are located , how much would everything cost you and if you need part time or full time.
