Safety / Grooming Kits
Are these kits a waste of money? Do you only really use a couple of things in them (aspirator / nail clippers)? I'm buying out my registry and wondering if the kit is really needed or if I just need a couple of key items instead.
Or if someone can recommend a great one that has everything you'd really use.
Thx!

I used the comb in mine. The ball aspirators stink - I suggest getting a battery powered one. You will be thankful you have it when the little one gets their first cold.
The nail clippers I have not used. I find I can't see if I have only the nail and not finger in there. So I use a cutile clipper and a file.

I have the red cross one. I use the brush, aspirator, tooth finger brush now. nail filer, nail cutter, I don't think its a waste if you don't have those things.

You need a rectal thermometer most of all. The hospital gave us a better aspirator than anything I can buy in the store. Not sure if that's usual, but I think they're usually in the bassinet and don't reuse them so you should definitely take that.
We have infant nail clippers which I use (the magnifying glass is pointless on them, but they're a good tiny size) and have used since day 4 (I tried to file, but she'd still rip up her face so I started cutting from a very young age).
I don't know what else is in those kits, but those are the only items I really use. We do have baby brush and combs and we use those, but DD had almost no hair until she was a year old so we didn't use them at the beginning. Still it's nice to have. Now we use a regular adult comb on her hair, but still the baby brush because it's much softer and easier to use.
I imagine it's nice to have a way to keep all the stuff together and organized. Not sure if it's more economical to just buy the pieces or if the kit would be nice to have since I don't have one, though. Hope this helps somehow!

Re: Safety / Grooming Kits
Thanks for the feedback!! The reviews on the Safety1st kit I was looking at (and others) said the aspirator wasn't good and the other stuff was cheaply made so I wasn't sure if I'd have to just get replacement items anyway.
My SIL swore by her battery operated aspirator!

I have the Summer Infant one. DD was bald so the brush/comb were a waste until recently, but the aspirator, therm, nail files, and nail clipper were great. It kept everything organized too.

i read reviews on amazon and all the kits had pretty horrible reviews.
i ended up just registering for the battery operated aspirator, a brush & comb set, nail clipper, and thermometer.

Re: Safety / Grooming Kits
Honestly, I think it's better if you buy everything separately. We have a kit and don't really use anything from it except the brush & nail files. We bought a new nail clipper with LED lights, rectal thermometer and battery operated aspirator. HTH
