health insurance & BP question
I just spoke with my health insurance (United Healthcare) and asked if they cover breast pumps - the woman said that they currently don't, but they will starting Jan 1, 2013.
Well, Baby's due mid-October and I know I won't survive with boob-only for 3 months
Do i have any options short of buying a pump on my own? Seems like such a waste of money

I would just rent one for the 3 months. Or try buying a really inexpensive one. I remember a few years ago I got one for about $100 from Target.

Does your plan cover it 100%? I have UHC as well and am wondering what I will be able to get in January.
I am borrowing one from my sister in the meantime.

too bad it'll be 3 months too late

I wonder how much it would cost to rent one; or maybe for the beginning if you're home on maternity leave try an inexpensive pump even maybe a manul pump just until the insurance can cover a new one.
There really should be some way for Women due between August & December to get their pumps covered. Just doesn't seem fair...

Re: health insurance & BP question
the lady at BBB said she's not sure how much you have to pay to rent one but that its about $50/month and they have a 3 month minimum. not sure if that info is 100% accurate or if you have to put any $$ down. Plus you have to buy certain parts so it almost works out to be the same price.
All health insuarnce companies are required to cover the pump starting on your next anniversary date.
My anni date is 4/1, the babies will be about 4 months by then and I'll have had to go back to work, so I registered for one. I want to start pumping before I return to work and it just seemed easier than to have to worry about renting one than buying one and dealing with the insurance company (GHI is a PITA).

South Nassau gave me the option of renting one from the hospital at a discounted price.

Definitely rent. You can get such an amazing quality one so much cheaper that way. (Quality you can't possibly buy, even.) See if BF works out for you and take it month by month rather than spending money upfront you don't need to spend at all. You'll see what you like, how you use it, and whether you actually do need one in those three months before its covered.
